Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is undeniable that, certain individuals claim history is the most vital school subject. Others assert that other fields, like science and technology, are more vital than history in the present. The following essay explains why I think history is one of the most important subjects in school.

To commence with, one of the most important subjects in schools is history, which teaches us the necessary points in our lives. It is obvious that nations learn from their history. It is widely known that when a territory has not learned its negative memory, it must face it again and again until it clearly learns its lessons. Simply put, nations grow up by their history. For instance, a country such as Iran must learn that other territories create problems for it, and it must be careful. However, Iranians have not learned their lesson and have repeatedly encountered these issues.

Moreover, some people assert that science and technology subjects are more important. They hold the belief that these subjects aid students in securing more lucrative careers. Moreover, they claim that these fields help our territory grow. Additionally, subjects like science and tech assist children in enhancing their cognitive performance. For instance, there is a common belief that children who study more math in school will earn more in the future. For another example, people with history

In conclusion, some people assert that history is the most important subject in schools; others argue that nowadays other subjects, such as science and technology, are more important than history. I totally agree with people who claim history is more important.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. The second body paragraph, which discusses science and technology, is significantly underdeveloped and ends abruptly mid-sentence ('For another example, people with history'), which leaves the argument incomplete. While the first body paragraph provides a relevant example regarding history, the overall task fulfillment is hindered by the lack of a balanced discussion and the unfinished nature of the second argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that both sides of the prompt are explored with equal depth and that all sentences are completed to fully support your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a basic attempt at logical progression. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used to signal the structure. However, the cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and the abrupt ending of the second paragraph severely disrupts the flow of the argument. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of a concluding thought in the second body paragraph makes the progression feel disjointed. Improving the logical connection between sentences and ensuring that paragraphs are fully developed would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use academic collocations like 'lucrative careers' and 'cognitive performance'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat words like 'important' and 'subjects' frequently. The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic expressions related to the topic of education and societal development, and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are grammatically correct, there are occasional errors, such as 'nations grow up by their history' (which is slightly unnatural) and the incomplete sentence at the end of the second paragraph. Punctuation is generally accurate, but the grammatical control is not consistent enough for a higher band. The range of structures is sufficient to communicate the main points, but more variety in complex sentence forms and greater attention to natural phrasing would be beneficial.
