Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is undeniable that it is a common belief that history is among the most crucial subjects in school however there is a more persuasive argument that science and technology are considered to be more necessary than history at present time.

From my point of view, I find all these subjects indispensable as history helps people to understand how the world become what it is today, whereas science and technology bring everyone closer to innovation and development.

To commence with, history has always been a huge part of a country. It tells people what had happened in the past, what their ancestors had gone through, and the soldiers had fought for. Every person should known about these historical events so as to appreciate what they today and pay homage to people who kept their country safe since wars for liberty played an important role in the past. But history just not about the guns and fire, it also informs us about ancestors, achievements.

However, science and technology seem to be integral parts of human developments during this age, therefore they hold a vital position just like a history. In fact throughout the process of development in every part, science and technology have always been essential parts as whether a country can surpass the others in various aspects depends on what technology it holds and or what science levels it has.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, but the development is significantly hindered by the incomplete conclusion and the failure to meet the minimum word count. The ideas regarding history and science are introduced but remain somewhat superficial, lacking specific examples or deep analysis. The conclusion is cut off mid-sentence, which prevents a clear summary of the argument. Because the response is under the 250-word requirement, the task achievement is negatively impacted, as the ideas are not fully extended or supported as required for higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is disrupted by the abrupt ending. While there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with' and 'However', the flow is sometimes mechanical. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the lack of a completed conclusion significantly affects the overall coherence of the piece. The logical development of the argument is hampered by the brevity of the paragraphs and the sudden termination of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are some repetitive word choices, such as 'parts' and 'important'. Phrases like 'guns and fire' are somewhat simplistic and lack academic tone. While the meaning is generally clear, there is little evidence of less common lexical items or sophisticated collocations. The student relies on basic vocabulary to convey ideas, which limits the ability to express complex arguments effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'how the world become what it is today' (tense error), 'Every person should known' (modal verb error), and 'history just not about' (missing verb). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly in the opening paragraph where a run-on sentence occurs due to a missing conjunction or full stop. These errors are frequent enough to distract the reader, though the overall meaning remains understandable.
