Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people think history is one of the most important school subjects, while others believe that science and technology are more important in today’s world. This essay will discuss both views and give my opinion.

On the one hand, history is an important subject because it teaches students about the past. For example, students can learn about wars, famous people and important events. This knowledge helps them understand how their country and society have developed. History can also teach people about the mistakes made in the past. As a result, people may avoid making similar mistakes in the future. In addition, learning history can help young people understand and respect their culture and traditions.

On the other hand, science and technology are becoming more important in modern life. People use technology every day at home, at school and at work. For example, computers and the internet make it easier for students to study and for workers to communicate. Science is also important because it helps doctors develop new medicines and treatments. Furthermore, many new jobs require knowledge of technology and science. Therefore, these subjects can give students useful skills for their future careers.

In my opinion, both history and science are important, but I believe science and technology are slightly more important today. This is because they have a direct effect on our daily lives and provide many opportunities for future jobs. However, history should not be ignored because it helps us understand the past. Therefore, schools should teach both areas and give students a balanced education.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the importance of history and the significance of science and technology. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the response. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the link between history and avoiding past mistakes, and the connection between science and future career opportunities. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, concrete examples rather than general statements (e.g., mentioning a specific historical event or a particular technological advancement), which would further develop your arguments and demonstrate a deeper level of critical thinking.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use transition signals effectively, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In addition.' The paragraphing is logical and helps the reader follow your argument. To improve, you could vary your cohesive devices further to avoid slightly repetitive structures. For instance, instead of relying heavily on 'For example' and 'In addition,' you could use more sophisticated linking phrases or referencing to connect sentences more fluidly, which would enhance the overall flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Words like 'developed,' 'traditions,' and 'opportunities' are used accurately. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the 'less common' or 'idiomatic' items required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations or topic-specific terminology. For example, instead of 'important,' you could use 'pivotal' or 'indispensable.' Expanding your range of synonyms and using more sophisticated phrasing would help you move into the higher band categories.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay shows a good level of grammatical control. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. Punctuation is generally accurate, and your meaning is always clear. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'If history were ignored, we would be destined to repeat past errors') or passive voice constructions, which are common in academic writing. Increasing the frequency of these complex forms while maintaining your current level of accuracy will significantly boost your score.
