Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely believed that school subjects play a vital role in shaping students' knowledge and future careers. Some people argue that history is one of the important school subjects, while others think that Science and Technology are more valuable in today's competitive world. This essay will discuss both view and explain why I believe Science and Technology are more important.

On the one hand, History is an essential school subject because it helps students to know more about past and they can learn valuable lessons from previous generations. By studying history students can learn about the cause of historical wars and revolutions and they can understand the importance of peace. Moreover, studying History can help students to understand our ethics, morals and even they can learn from past mistakes. History will teach cultures and traditions that ancestors have followed, and they get to know the reasons behind these customs. For instance, learning about India's independence struggle enables young people to appreciate the efforts and scarifies of freedom fighters and develop a sense of patriotism. Therefore, learning History will help students to learn about past, historical moments and develop patriotism.

On the other hand, Science and Technology are becoming increasingly important because they prepare students for the modern world. Nowadays there is an increase demand for job in this competitive world. By learning Science and Technology, one can improve their skills to get a job. Furthermore, learning Science and Technology will have better career growth and good skills. Moreover, technological developments have improved in healthcare, transportation and education sectors which make peoples life more convenient. For example, many students now choose careers in software engineering because technological skills are highly demanding in today's job market. Hence, Science and Technology are very important for better career opportunities and to improve skills.

In conclusion, although History is important for understanding the past and developing patriotism, I strongly believe that Science and Technology are more important in today's society because they provide better career growth, enhance skills and provide job opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are generally well-developed, particularly in the second body paragraph regarding the practical benefits of Science and Technology. However, the development of the History argument is slightly repetitive, focusing heavily on 'patriotism' and 'past' without exploring deeper academic or critical thinking benefits. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to provide more nuanced examples or deeper analysis of how these subjects impact society beyond simple job prospects or national pride. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore' to start sentences. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be linked more fluidly to avoid a list-like structure. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'competitive world', 'ancestors', 'patriotism', and 'software engineering'. There is an attempt to use topic-specific language, which is successful. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'scarifies of freedom fighters' (should be 'sacrifices') and 'technological skills are highly demanding' (should be 'in high demand'). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding the range of collocations and synonyms would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally accurate and communication is never impeded, there are persistent minor errors. Examples include 'discuss both view' (should be 'views'), 'know more about past' (should be 'the past'), and 'make peoples life' (should be 'people's lives'). There are also some issues with article usage and pluralization. The student shows good control over basic structures, but the range of complex grammatical forms is somewhat restricted. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, while incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence types.
