Student answer (Band 6.5)

Different people have different opinions about school subjects. Some believe that History is the most important subject, while others think that Science and Technology are more important than History.

People who believe that History is important argue that teaching it to school students is necessary because it gives them information about their past, their ancestors, how they lived their lives, and the problems they faced and solved. It also teaches students about how their ancestors gained freedom and obtained their homeland, as well as the struggles they went through. As a result, current generations can learn about their culture and beliefs.

On the other hand, some people think that Science and Technology are more important because they are the future. If students do not learn these technical skills, they may find it difficult to compete with other students who have developed their skills in these areas. Learning about science and technology is not only beneficial for individuals but also for their countries and societies. Therefore, learning these skills may be more important than studying History. For example, when we look at developed countries, we can see that they have achieved progress by adopting and investing in Science and Technology. In contrast, developing countries may struggle when they do not give enough attention to these areas. Nowadays, almost everything depends on technology, and technological developments have made many activities easier and more efficient.

In my opinion, learning Science and Technology is more important than studying History. If we want to achieve greater progress in the future, we must adopt new technologies and teach students these skills at school. This will help them compete with students from other countries and contribute to the development of their own country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The arguments for History (cultural identity and lessons from the past) and Science/Technology (future competitiveness and national progress) are relevant and logically developed. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific, nuanced examples rather than general statements about 'developed countries.' The conclusion effectively synthesizes the argument, ensuring the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two viewpoints is handled well using 'On the other hand.' Cohesive devices such as 'For example,' 'In contrast,' and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. The flow is smooth, and the reader is guided clearly through the writer's argument without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms such as 'ancestors,' 'technical skills,' 'investing,' and 'efficient' accurately. While the range is adequate to convey meaning precisely, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors, and the language used is natural and fits the academic context well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. For instance, the use of conditional sentences ('If students do not learn...') and complex noun phrases shows a solid grasp of grammar. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the grammatical range is functional and accurate, it does not consistently display the high level of flexibility or the wide variety of complex structures required for a band 8 or 9.
