Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, education plays a vital role in the development of the society. There are various subjects available to study, such as history, science and art. Some people say history is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like science and technology are more important than history. In my opinion subjects like science and technology hold more value than history.

This essay discusses both views.

Learning history provides great knowledge about the past. People can learn so many things from the past mistakes. People take great pride in their history, roots and their cultures. History subject may spark curiosity in the children. History can illustrate great stories and chapters of the human history. Eventually, every present day will be an integral piece of the past. Therefore, it is important to study history.

Conversely, history cannot decide the future. In the contemporary era, learning science may be more beneficial. We witness so many new developments in all the fields. For example, the invention of AI and tools like Chatgpt and Gemini have completely transformed the way humans live today. Many people lost their jobs in the past two years. So, to stay ahead of the trend and competition, it is very important to study science. Furthermore, most of the tech jobs require knowledge of science and maths. Nobody will ask interview questions about history in a multi national corporation.

Believe it or not, but science is the future. Learning science can open many opportunities. A science student can be an engineer, a doctor and a researcher. These jobs pay very substantial amount of salary. History is all about the past, so it is better to focus on the future and the present.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the argument for science is supported by contemporary examples like AI, the discussion on history is more generic and lacks specific, illustrative examples. The essay covers all parts of the prompt, but the depth of analysis could be improved by connecting the importance of history to modern societal needs more explicitly. The position is consistent throughout, but the conclusion is brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'Conversely', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the general importance of history and the specific point about 'human history' is a bit repetitive. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'contemporary era', 'integral piece', and 'multi-national corporation'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'History subject' instead of 'The subject of history' or 'History is all about the past'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic expressions to demonstrate greater lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over basic grammar, and errors do not impede communication. However, there are minor errors in article usage and pluralization, such as 'development of the society' (should be 'society' in general) and 'human history' (often redundant). Complex structures are attempted, but they are sometimes slightly awkward, such as 'Believe it or not, but science is the future'. Increasing the variety of complex sentence forms and ensuring greater precision in punctuation would improve the score in this criterion.
