Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is a growing debate on which subjects educational institutes should emphasize on. Some believe that history is the most important while others argue that science and technology are more crucial subjects for modern times. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opinion.

Proponents of the first view claim that History is a vital school subject as it allows students to learn from past events and avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future. Additionally, it allows the younger generation to empathize and understand the hardships that their forefathers encountered. This ignites a sense of belonging and affection, while also promoting patriotism towards the country. Furthermore, history provides a chance for the children to experience the evolution of the world, for instance how the process of lighting fire started in the stone ages by rubbing stones and translated to using stovetops by the 21st century .

Conversely, those who advocate for Science and technology believe that the world is constantly evolving and the digitalization is growing. A large portion of future occupations and jobs will be influenced by AI and automation. Many jobs will require tech-educated employees and to meet the demands of future recruiters, students need to be well equipped with the fundamentals of science and technology.

In conclusion, after considering both views I partially believe with both sides. One one hand History provides valuable lessons from past events and struggles and helps establish a relationship with their roots. While science helps students adapt to the new era and the increasing needs of todays world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the arguments for history are well-supported with examples like the evolution of fire, the section on science and technology is less developed and lacks specific examples or deeper analysis of why it is 'more important'. The conclusion is brief and could have been used to better synthesize the two perspectives rather than simply stating a partial agreement. To reach a higher band, ensure that both sides of the argument are explored with equal depth and that your personal opinion is integrated more fluidly throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'Conversely' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the phrase 'I partially believe with both sides' is slightly awkward and could be improved for better cohesion. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good topic-specific terms like 'digitalization', 'automation', and 'forefathers'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices or phrasing, such as 'emphasize on' (the verb 'emphasize' does not take a preposition) and 'translated to' (which is not the best collocation for the evolution of technology). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding unnecessary prepositions. The range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'One one hand' (a typo) and the missing article in 'in the stone ages'. Additionally, the sentence 'I partially believe with both sides' is grammatically incorrect; 'agree with' would be more appropriate. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for small errors like missing articles and prepositions, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
