On the one hand, History plays a crucial role in shaping students' understanding of the past events and learning the mistakes in the past which cannot be happening again. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the arguments for History are reasonably supported, the section on Science and Technology relies on a list of general benefits rather than a cohesive argument. The response covers all parts of the prompt, but the explanation of 'why' these subjects are important could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs: introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, such as in the second body paragraph where the connection between 'modern technology' and 'military research' feels abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved for better logical progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'civic responsibility', 'political struggle', and 'innovations'. However, there are several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'fast changing worlds' (should be 'world'), 'make the study more faster' (redundant comparative), and 'acknowledge students about' (should be 'inform' or 'educate'). These errors do not impede communication but indicate a limited range of precise vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('science and technology plays', 'History teach'), missing articles, and incorrect preposition usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage and capitalization. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. The control over complex structures is not yet consistent enough for a Band 7.0.
