Student answer (Band 6.5)

The importance of various school subjects is often a topic of debate. Most people have differing opinions on what subjects impact a student's life and development the most. Two of the most common subjects in this regard are History and Science and Technology.

A significant number of people believe that History is one of the most importance school subjects. They believe that one cannot truly understand their present without understanding their history. Further, they believe that a thorough study of history helps us understand past mistakes and avoid similar patterns in the future.

In contrast, a lot of people are also of the opinion that science and technology is one of the most important subjects. Supporters of this view opine that science and technology is a lot more objective as a field study and it helps us understand the practical realities of the world. Additionally, they believe that studying science and technology helps students in being more rational and practical in their outlook.

In my opinion, it would not be appropriate to dismiss either subject entirely. However, I do believe that the study of history is a far more imperative for the human race as a whole. While I wholeheartedly acknowledge the fact that the study of history is rather subjective and stems from various narratives, I believe that understanding these varied narratives is extremely crucial. For example, the way that the British schools and Indian schools teach the history of colonialism differs significantly. Understanding these contrasting perspectives students formulate more informed opinions and understandings. Further, it would be futile to try and innovate new things without understanding the reasons for similar failures in the past.

In conclusion, I believe that while science and technology and history are both extremely vital subjects, the study of history is indispensable to our understanding of the human race and its development. The study of history helps us develop a more holistic perspective and eventually helps us understand ourselves and the world around us a lot better.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and well-supported, particularly in the fourth paragraph where you provide a specific example regarding the teaching of colonialism to illustrate your point about historical narratives. To reach a higher band, ensure that the discussion of the opposing view (science and technology) is as equally developed as your own opinion. Currently, the arguments for science and technology are slightly more generic compared to the depth provided for history.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and you use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Additionally', and 'Further' to link your points effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall flow. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further, as some transitions are quite standard. Additionally, ensure that the referencing within sentences is always precise to avoid any minor ambiguity in how ideas relate to one another.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'thorough study', 'rational and practical', and 'holistic perspective' show a good command of language. There are some minor issues, such as 'importance school subjects' (should be 'important') and 'field study' (should be 'field of study'). While you use some less common items, increasing the use of more sophisticated collocations or academic synonyms would help elevate the lexical score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'science and technology is' (should be 'are' as it refers to two subjects) and 'a far more imperative' (should be 'far more imperative' or 'a far more imperative subject'). These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication, allowing for a solid score in this criterion.
