Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some people argue that History is among the most important subjects that children should study at school, whereas others believe that Science and Technology are more valuable in the modern world. Although History plays a crucial role in helping young people understand the past, I believe that Science and Technology deserve greater emphasis because of their direct impact on contemporary life and future development.

On the one hand, History is an essential subject because it enables students to understand how present-day societies have been shaped. By studying significant events, political decisions and social changes, young people can learn valuable lessons from the successes and failures of previous generations. This can also help them develop a stronger sense of cultural identity and understand why certain traditions and institutions exist today. For example, studying major conflicts in history can demonstrate how political tensions and poor decision-making can lead to serious consequences, helping future generations avoid repeating similar mistakes.

On the other hand, Science and Technology are arguably more important in today's rapidly changing world. Scientific knowledge has contributed to remarkable advances in medicine, agriculture, transportation and environmental protection, while technological developments have transformed the way people communicate, work and access information. Furthermore, schools need to prepare students for a labour market increasingly dependent on digital and scientific skills. For instance, developments in medical technology have enabled doctors to diagnose and treat many illnesses more effectively, while digital technologies allow students to access educational resources from almost anywhere in the world.

In my view, however, this does not mean that History should be removed from school curricula. Rather, the two areas should complement each other. History provides students with an understanding of human experience and helps them make informed decisions, while Science and Technology equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to address current and future challenges. Nevertheless, given the pace of technological change and its growing importance in almost every profession, I believe that greater emphasis should be placed on Science and Technology in modern education.

In conclusion, History remains a valuable school subject because it teaches students about the past and helps them understand the present. However, I believe that Science and Technology are more important in today's world because they drive innovation, improve people's lives and prepare young people for the demands of the future.
