Student answer (Band 7.5)
Some people believe that History is one of the most important subjects that students should study at school, while others argue that Science and Technology are more valuable in today’s rapidly changing world. Although both views have merit, I believe that students need a balance of these subjects because History provides important lessons from the past, whereas Science and Technology prepare young people for the future.
On the one hand, History is an essential subject because it helps students understand how societies and countries have developed. By studying past events, students can learn about the causes and consequences of wars, political changes, economic crises and social movements. This knowledge can help people avoid repeating the mistakes of previous generations. For example, learning about the two World Wars can help students understand the devastating consequences of international conflict and the importance of cooperation between countries. History can also help young people develop a sense of cultural identity and understand the traditions of their own society.
On the other hand, Science and Technology are particularly important in the modern world because they directly contribute to economic growth and improvements in people's lives. Scientific discoveries have led to major developments in medicine, communication, transportation and energy. In addition, technological skills are increasingly required in the workplace. For instance, knowledge of computers, artificial intelligence and data analysis can provide young people with better employment opportunities in a highly competitive global economy. Therefore, supporters of Science and Technology argue that schools should give greater attention to these practical and future-oriented subjects.
In my opinion, it would be a mistake to consider one group of subjects more important than the other. Science and Technology are crucial for solving future problems, such as climate change and diseases, but History teaches students how human decisions have shaped the world and what can be learned from past successes and failures. A well-educated person should therefore have knowledge of both areas.
In conclusion, while History helps students understand the past and learn from it, Science and Technology provide the knowledge and skills needed to deal with future challenges. I believe that schools should maintain a balanced curriculum rather than prioritising one subject over another.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly discussed both perspectives—the importance of History and the importance of Science and Technology—and provided a well-reasoned personal opinion. Your position is consistent throughout the essay, starting from the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. The ideas are well-developed, with relevant examples such as the World Wars for History and specific technological fields like data analysis for the second perspective. The arguments are logical and directly support your thesis that a balanced curriculum is necessary. The response is comprehensive and demonstrates a clear understanding of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two viewpoints is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. You use linking words effectively, such as 'Although', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore', to connect sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The flow of information is natural, and the reader can easily follow your line of reasoning from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic essay. You use precise terms such as 'rapidly changing world', 'economic crises', 'cultural identity', and 'future-oriented'. The language is natural and conveys your meaning clearly. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current range is sufficient to express complex ideas with precision and flexibility, and there are no noticeable errors in word choice or spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although both views have merit, I believe that...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. You maintain a formal tone throughout, which is appropriate for this task. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The variety of structures used contributes to a fluent and professional reading experience, demonstrating a high level of grammatical competence.
