Student answer (Band 7.5)
History is widely considered a fundamental school subject because it enables young people to understand how societies have evolved and why the modern world is the way it is. However, others argue that, given the rapid pace of technological development, science and technology are now more important. Although both perspectives have merit, I believe that science and technology should receive greater emphasis in contemporary education.
On the one hand, studying history provides students with a deeper understanding of their cultural and political heritage. By examining events such as wars, revolutions and social movements, students can identify the causes of past problems and learn from the consequences of previous decisions. This can foster critical thinking and help societies avoid repeating serious mistakes. Furthermore, knowledge of national and world history can strengthen a sense of identity and encourage greater appreciation of different cultures. For example, learning about the causes and consequences of the Second World War can demonstrate the devastating effects of political extremism and international conflict.
On the other hand, science and technology have a more direct influence on people’s lives and future employment prospects. Modern societies increasingly depend on scientific innovation in fields such as medicine, renewable energy, artificial intelligence and engineering. Consequently, students who acquire scientific and technological skills are better equipped to participate in an increasingly digital and competitive labour market. For instance, proficiency in digital tools is now essential in numerous professions, including some that barely existed a generation ago.
In conclusion, while history remains indispensable for developing cultural awareness and learning from the past, I believe science and technology are more important in preparing students for the challenges of the future. Schools should therefore preserve history within the curriculum while allocating greater attention to scientific and technological education.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly presented both viewpoints and maintained a consistent, well-supported position throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the arguments regarding the practical benefits of science and technology in the modern labor market. Each paragraph is focused, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes your argument. To reach the highest band, you could further extend the discussion by briefly acknowledging how history might actually contribute to scientific progress (e.g., learning from past scientific failures), which would add even more depth to your analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between the two viewpoints is smooth, facilitated by effective cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Consequently.' The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. The use of referencing is precise, and the flow of ideas is natural throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive usage, making the structure highly effective.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'fundamental school subject,' 'rapid pace of technological development,' and 'indispensable for developing cultural awareness' demonstrate a strong command of academic language. The collocations are natural, and there are no noticeable errors in word choice. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, incorporating a few more sophisticated, less common lexical items could elevate the response further toward the highest band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although both perspectives have merit, I believe...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. The writing is fluent, and there are no grammatical slips that impede communication. The variety of structures used—from conditional-like logic to compound-complex sentences—is well-suited to the academic nature of the task.
