Student answer (Band 6.5)

Education plays a vital role in shaping the future careers of students. It is often argued that some state that History is one of the most significant school subjects. In contrast, others believe that subjects such as Science and Technology are more essential than History. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opinion.

On the one hand, History is one of the most important school subjects for students because studying history has numerous benefits. Learning history makes students know about our cultural heritage and revolutionary events. Moreover, they can learn about past mistakes, and this can be helpful to them to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future. In addition, students can learn about historical monuments and ancient buildings. As a result, they may develop a sense of responsibility to preserve these places for future generations. However, this can promote tourism, as well-preserved historical sites can attract visitors and generate income for local communities. On top of that, learning history can assist students in learning more about different cultures, traditions and customs at that time. Therefore, learning history benefits students in learning about past mistakes and revolutionary events, and they also develop a social responsibility to preserve historical sites.

On the other hand, studying science and technology has several advantages. Studying science and technology provides quality education; students often develop more skills and grab a greater job opportunities. Moreover, these skills can be highly helpful to compete in today's job market. For instance, an engineering student learns a new programming language with the help of advanced technology, and this can be helpful at their work placements. Furthermore, learning science and technology equips students to gain more practical skills, and this can be useful to solve real-world problems creatively and develop innovative solutions. Hence, studying science and technology will be useful for students to improve their skills and provide better career opportunities, and they can face real-world challenges.

In conclusion, although learning history benefits students in learning about past mistakes, traditional cultures, and preserving ancient sites, I strongly believe studying science and history will be more useful to students to gain more skills and to have better job opportunities, and as well as they can tackle the solution to the real-world issues with more creativity and an innovative way.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly in the body paragraphs. However, the conclusion contains a slight confusion in the phrasing 'studying science and history', which contradicts the earlier argument favoring science and technology. While the position is clear throughout, the development of the 'History' argument is slightly repetitive, focusing heavily on 'past mistakes' and 'preserving sites' without fully exploring the broader educational value. Overall, the response meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is occasional repetition of phrases like 'learning history' and 'studying science and technology' at the start of sentences, which makes the flow feel a bit rigid. Despite this, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. The student makes use of some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'cultural heritage', 'revolutionary events', 'job market', and 'innovative solutions'. While the range is adequate, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. There is some repetition of basic verbs and nouns (e.g., 'learning', 'useful', 'important'). The word choice is generally accurate, but there are no examples of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions that would demonstrate a more flexible control of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, such as 'Although learning history benefits students..., I strongly believe...'. However, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'this can be helpful to them to avoid' (clunky phrasing) and 'as well as they can tackle' (incorrect structure in the conclusion). Punctuation is generally correct, but some sentences are slightly over-long and could benefit from better clause management. The errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the writing from reaching a higher level of grammatical control.
