Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are some people who thinks that studying History is more important than Science and Technology, while other some people thinks otherwise. In my own perspective, both subjects are important and here are the reasons why...

Learning about history is crucial because I think it is important for us to know the important events that happened in the past. It is also a way for us to prevent worse things to happen in the near future. For example, in our country, we used to have a president who was a dictator and he did a lot of things that violated human rights. After a two decades, his son runs for presidency and some Filipinos being aware of his family background, began to oppose and taught everyone about the things that happened in the past during his late fathers term as a president.

On the other hand, Science and Technology is extremely important as well, especially now that most of the things are run by computers and people use AI. Science and Technology also helps us to make our everyday life easy and at some point improves our way of living and helps our community and environment as well through innovations.

In conclusion, both subjects are necessary to learn. It is important for us to learn about our past to know as to why things are the way they are now and also extremely important to learn about science and technology as it will help us in the future and will improve our lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the example regarding the Philippine presidency is relevant, the explanation of why Science and Technology is important remains quite general, relying on broad statements like 'makes our everyday life easy'. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific, nuanced arguments for both sides. The introduction is also quite brief and lacks a clear thesis statement that outlines the essay's direction. Overall, the task is addressed, but the depth of analysis is insufficient for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in the argument. However, the transitions between sentences within paragraphs are sometimes mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the start of the second paragraph relies heavily on simple sentence structures. To improve, try to use a wider range of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., using pronouns or synonyms to refer back to previous ideas) is more precise to improve the flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and sophistication. You rely on common phrases such as 'important', 'things', and 'make our everyday life easy'. While these words are used correctly, they do not demonstrate the range required for a higher band. There are also some minor errors in collocation, such as 'After a two decades' (should be 'After two decades') and 'late fathers term' (should be 'late father's term'). To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring correct word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('some people who thinks', 'some people thinks') and missing articles or possessive apostrophes ('late fathers term'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, to demonstrate greater grammatical control.
