Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this world there are always two groups of people. One group thinks that particular thing is good while the other group opposes that view. So, in education there is also the same behavior.

The discussion is that the most important subject in school is weather History or Science and technology. Some people say that History is indeed the most crucial subject in school subjects. They put many solid reasons in this regard. They say that the History is the reflection of nations culture and traditions. Children must learn and read History. They say that it is necessary for the well-being of their country. The most solid argument in this regard is that the History is the only subject that enables the people to learn about the most noble aspects of past of their country.

However, the opposing group this view also exists. Such people say that the Science is most important in subjects. They say that today the world is advancing and to fulfill this demand Science and technology are the need of hour. The advancement in humanity is a result of progress in field of science and technology. Today we are enable to reach moon and other stars just because of Science. They also say that these subjects are also helpful in future for students as they have to earn their living.

Both the groups are right at their own place but in my opinion Science and Technology have an upper hand in this debate. My reason is that the world is moving toward technology. This demand is fulfilled by subjects like Science and technology are useful. As far History is related it is also important for students to learn about the past history and golden traditions. But today the time is demanding advancement and subjects like History are less desirable.

Concluding all the debate, in present Science and technology are more important in school subjects than any other one.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument for History relies on general statements about 'noble aspects' without specific examples, and the argument for Science focuses heavily on 'earning a living' and 'reaching the moon' without deeper analysis of how these subjects shape critical thinking or societal progress. While the position is consistent, the supporting points lack the depth required for a higher band. The essay covers all parts of the prompt, but the arguments remain at a basic level of abstraction.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'In this regard' and 'They say that' are used frequently, which makes the flow feel a bit stilted. Additionally, some transitions between sentences are abrupt, such as the jump between the importance of history and the opposing view on science. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range expected at higher levels. The student relies on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'most important subject' and 'solid reasons'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'the time is demanding advancement' and 'the need of hour' (which should be 'the need of the hour'). While the meaning is always clear, the lack of sophisticated or topic-specific vocabulary limits the score. To improve, the student should focus on using more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Common issues include missing articles ('the' before 'History' or 'Science'), subject-verb agreement errors, and awkward phrasing like 'today we are enable to reach moon'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to impact the flow. The student attempts complex structures, but they are often marred by minor inaccuracies. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy and article usage would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
