Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often considered that history is one of the most important school subjects, whereas others argue that nowadays, subjects like science and technology are more significant than history. In my opinion, science and technology are more valuable fields of study that can provide human beings with immense opportunities and improve people's quality of life.
Studying history is a crucial part of school education. It gives students an insight into the history of several regions and the individuals who contributed to their development. Moreover, it introduces students to politicians and leaders who worked tirelessly to secure independence for their nations. They might be able to develop the qualities demonstrated by these leaders by learning about their lives and achievements. For example, some students might develop a passion for serving their country. Inspired by these great figures, they may acquire characteristics like courage, patriotism and perseverance. As a result, young people may become responsible citizens and contribute positively to society.
The view that I support is that science and technology are more important in today's world. These subjects give people practical skills and knowledge that are valuable in the modern job market. First, many students can access a range of online courses that equip them with specific skills to work remotely. For example, a student who completes an online course in graphic designing or web development can use these skills to work from home for international clients. Secondly, science brings substantial benefits, particularly in the field of health and benefits. Furthermore, it has introduced many treatments for previously incurable diseases. For example, advances in cancer research have resulted in more effective treatments, helping many patients live longer and healthier lives.
In conclusion, although history has its own significance, science and technology have played a greater role in benefiting humanity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly discuss both sides of the argument and provide a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the benefits of history for character building and the practical advantages of science and technology in the modern job market. The supporting examples, such as graphic design and cancer research, are relevant and effectively illustrate your points. To reach a higher band, ensure that the conclusion fully synthesizes the arguments rather than just restating the preference, perhaps by briefly acknowledging how the two fields could potentially complement each other in a balanced curriculum.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'moreover', 'as a result', 'first', and 'furthermore' to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow. To improve further, ensure that the transition between the two body paragraphs is slightly more nuanced to emphasize the contrast between the two viewpoints.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'immense opportunities', 'tirelessly to secure', 'substantial benefits', and 'previously incurable diseases' show a good command of language. There is an awareness of style and collocation, and the vocabulary is used accurately throughout the text. While the range is good, incorporating a few more sophisticated or academic collocations related to educational philosophy or societal progress could elevate the response to a higher band. Overall, the vocabulary is natural and effectively conveys your meaning without any errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like constructions and relative clauses (e.g., 'a student who completes an online course... can use these skills'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is strong. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. To reach the highest band, you could experiment with a wider variety of advanced grammatical structures, such as inversion or more complex passive constructions, to demonstrate even greater flexibility in your writing. Your current control is consistent and reliable.
