Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often argued that History is one of the most crucial school subjects because it connects students with their roots, whereas others believe that subjects such as Science and Technology are more important today. I completely agree with the latter view, particularly because the modern world is heavily dependent on scientific breakthroughs and technological innovations.
On the one hand, History teaches students about the struggles, sacrifices and experiences of previous generations, which encourages them to value their culture and independence. As a result, they are less likely to take the privileges they enjoy today for granted. For example, when students learn about the Liberation War of Bangladesh, they can develop greater respect for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country's independence. Such knowledge can also encourage young people to become more responsible, disciplined and respectful citizens. Therefore, many people consider History to be one of the most important subjects in schools.
On the other hand, the modern world is inevitably connected to Science and Technology. Scientific research and technological advances are continuously shaping the future in terms of our lifestyles, employment and economic development. Consequently, it is important for schools to prioritise these subjects so that students can develop a strong foundation and become interested in pursuing careers in scientific and technological fields. For instance, when schools place greater emphasis on Science and Technology, students may become interested in becoming scientists, researchers or technology developers, who can contribute to society through innovation. Hence, greater emphasis should be placed on these subjects than on History in today's rapidly changing world.
In conclusion, although History is an important school subject because it helps students remain connected to their culture and understand the sacrifices of previous generations, I firmly believe that Science and Technology are more important today, as modern society is increasingly dependent on scientific research and technological advancements.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly discussed both views regarding the importance of History versus Science and Technology and maintained a consistent, well-supported position throughout. The arguments are logical and well-developed, particularly the use of the Liberation War of Bangladesh as a concrete example to illustrate the value of History. The transition to your own opinion is seamless, and the reasons provided for prioritizing Science and Technology—such as economic development and career prospects—are relevant and persuasive. The essay is balanced, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes your position.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two viewpoints is handled effectively using cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. The use of linking words such as 'consequently', 'therefore', and 'although' ensures that the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of the argument, and referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is coherent and supports the overall argument well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic context. Phrases such as 'technological innovations', 'scientific breakthroughs', and 'rapidly changing world' are used accurately and naturally. While the vocabulary is precise and fits the topic well, it could be elevated further by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common academic items to reach the highest band. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your ideas with precision, and there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'when schools place greater emphasis on Science and Technology, students may become interested...'). Your control over grammar and punctuation is strong, with the majority of sentences being error-free. The writing is clear and professional, and there are no recurring grammatical issues that distract the reader. The use of tenses is consistent, and the overall accuracy is high, reflecting a solid command of English grammar.
