Student answer (Band 6.0)

History as a subject has two sides. On one side it is looked upon as one of the integral school subject while others argue that it should not be favoured over subjects like science and technology which have much more modern day applications, that these subjects are more important.

While debating in favour of history we come to the argument that history is the subject that teaches us who we are and that we learn from our mistakes in the past. Apart from these bookish quotes history has much more significance. Through history we can recognize the patterns in the past such as what devastations or disasters ended huge civilizations so we can mend our civilization in a way that we stay safe from such disasters. Moreover history of an area gives important insight of how previously armies attacked that certain area therefore helping us to make better defenses. Further more teaching students history develops skills in students including ethics, communication skills, and much more.

While discussing against teaching history people come up with the fact that Science or modern Technology has way more practical uses in the modern world and any countries progress today is measured directly through its technological advancements. So people argue that instead of teaching old school subjects like history the energy of students should be directed towards science and technology from the beginning.

Although both sides have their own solid arguments I see it like that history is important to be taught to students for many valid reasons. But it should not be taught so aggressively that it diverts their energy from learning other important things such as scientific and technological subjects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of historical patterns and the practical necessity of technology. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about 'ethics and communication skills' is mentioned but not expanded upon with specific examples. The conclusion is clear, but the overall depth of the arguments could be improved to reach a higher band. The response covers all parts of the prompt, but some points remain at a surface level, which is characteristic of a Band 6.5 or 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On one side', 'Moreover', and 'Although', but some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother in the second paragraph. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the essay maintains a consistent focus throughout, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'integral', 'devastations', and 'technological advancements'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'looked upon as one of the integral school subject' (should be 'subjects') and 'history of an area gives important insight of' (should be 'into'). The range is sufficient to communicate the message effectively but lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('history is the subject that teaches us' is correct, but 'integral school subject' lacks the plural) and punctuation errors. Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'I see it like that history is important'. The control of grammar is generally good, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score. The majority of the content is error-free, but the errors are noticeable.
