Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both views regarding the importance of History versus Science and Technology. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times repetitive. For instance, the argument for History is somewhat vague, focusing on 'culture and nature' without providing concrete examples of how it benefits society. The argument for Science is better developed but relies heavily on the idea of 'finance' and 'jobs'. The student's own opinion is not clearly stated or integrated into the structure, which is a requirement of the prompt. The ideas are relevant but lack the depth required for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as 'In the commence' to start the first body paragraph, which is not standard English. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical flow. While there is an attempt to use transition words like 'Secondly', the connections between sentences within paragraphs are weak, often relying on simple, repetitive structures rather than sophisticated linking.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'major school subject' instead of 'major school subjects', 'developing centuries', and 'finance problem'. The student struggles to express complex ideas precisely, often using basic terms like 'good' or 'important' repeatedly. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety and the presence of non-standard phrasing prevent the response from reaching a higher band. More precise terminology related to education and societal development is needed.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Many people follows', 'science related they can became'), article usage, and sentence structure. The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple or poorly constructed complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they are frequent enough to demonstrate a lack of control over complex grammatical forms.
