Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that the knowledge about the past is the essential part in academic discipline whereas others believe that Science and technology holds more weight than history in the current era. Although knowing about ancient era enhances our knowledge related to premodern societies, I believe, Science and technology are more important for students to learn because every job either emerging or disappearing due to technical advancements and how to survive in this fast forwarding era is much more important question for next generation.

On the one hand, history tells us about ancient civilisations that were built in the past without modern tools and techniques. It provides the vast amount of knowledge that how human evolved from stone age to information age, surviving all hurdles such as natural disasters and species extinctions. Many premodern civilisations have laid the foundation for contemporary civilisation, which could not be possible to achieve without studying history. For instance, Mohenjo daro and Harappa civilisations were the two great twin hubs of ancient Indus valley civilisation which inspired modern drainage systems and grid architectures for buildings. However, history can not teach about how to deal with modern problems which are more important than understanding the past.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction. However, the essay is incomplete, as it cuts off mid-sentence in the final paragraph. This prevents the full development of the argument regarding Science and technology. While the first body paragraph provides a relevant example (Indus Valley), the second paragraph lacks sufficient development due to the abrupt ending. To reach a higher band, you must ensure that all parts of the prompt are fully explored and that the essay reaches a logical conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay uses basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' to signal the structure. Paragraphing is present, but the abrupt termination of the text disrupts the overall flow and logical progression. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of a concluding paragraph means the essay fails to provide a summary of the main points, which is a key requirement for a well-structured academic response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at topic-specific language like 'contemporary civilisation' and 'technical advancements'. However, there are some awkward collocations and minor errors, such as 'fast forwarding era' (should be 'fast-paced era') and 'the knowledge about the past is the essential part' (should be 'an essential part'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Science and technology holds' (subject-verb agreement error, should be 'hold') and 'how human evolved' (should be 'how humans evolved'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the incomplete nature of the final sentence significantly impacts the overall grammatical control. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring all sentences are complete and punctuated correctly.
