Student answer (Band 6.0)

One section of society believe that history subject should be taught as priority in the school, while another section thinks that teachers should focus more on science and technology. I will discuss both viewpoints and give my opinion in the following paragraphs.

To commence with, history is one of the most important subject. The first and the formost reason is that people comes to know about their culture and traditional values. To elaborate, nowadays youngster prefer to follow western culture they are forgetting their own cultural backgrounds. Moreover, students will get a chance to know about the mistake their ancestors did in the past related to wars, conflicts and other problems, which may help society to avoid similar mistakes in the future.

On the other hand, science and technology are more necessary than history. Students can pursue their career in this field, because there are more job opportunities, such as engineer, medical and IT sectors. Additionally, technology useful in everyday in life, because technology is now used for communication, banking, education, tranport and shopping.

I believe that science and technology is more beneficial to teach pupils in the school because it is useful to complete their daily tasks related to study and provide more career opportunitie.

To conclude, no doubt history provides knowlegde about the culture and tradtional values but teaching science and technology in the classroom has more benefits to deal with daily life difficulties and give opportunity to build career and technolgy helps students gain important knowlegde about various subject.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both viewpoints and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the importance of history for cultural awareness and science for career prospects, the arguments lack depth and specific examples. For instance, you mention 'western culture' and 'ancestors' but do not expand on how history specifically prevents modern conflicts. Similarly, the section on technology is quite brief. To reach a higher band, you should aim to extend your points with more detailed explanations or concrete illustrations. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, merely restating the points rather than synthesising them effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally weak. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition between the importance of history and the mention of ancestors could be smoother. Additionally, some sentences are slightly disjointed, which affects the overall progression of ideas. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. You use some relevant topic-specific vocabulary like 'cultural backgrounds', 'job opportunities', and 'IT sectors'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'formost', 'knowlegde', 'tradtional', and 'technolgy'. Furthermore, some word choices are slightly awkward, such as 'history subject' instead of 'the subject of history' or 'technology useful in everyday in life'. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensure you proofread for spelling accuracy, as these errors occasionally distract the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('people comes to know', 'science and technology is'), missing articles ('in the school'), and punctuation errors. For example, 'technology useful in everyday in life' is a fragmented sentence structure. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Attempting more complex sentence structures with greater accuracy will also help you achieve a higher band.
