Student answer (Band 7.0)
History is often considered one of the most important subjects at school, while others argue that science and technology are more valuable in the modern world. Both views have valid points, but I believe that students should study both areas because they provide different and equally useful benefits.
On the one hand, history plays an important role in education because it helps students understand how societies have developed over time. By learning about wars, political changes, and important historical figures, young people can understand the reasons behind many current events. History can also teach valuable lessons from past mistakes and prevent people from repeating them. For example, studying the causes of major wars can help students understand the importance of cooperation and peaceful solutions to conflicts.
On the other hand, science and technology are becoming increasingly important in everyday life. Scientific knowledge contributes to advances in medicine, environmental protection, transportation, and communication. Technology also provides students with skills that can help them succeed in the modern workplace. For instance, knowledge of computers and artificial intelligence is now useful in many different careers, from business to healthcare. In my experience, using technology for research and learning has made education faster and more accessible.
In my opinion, science and technology may be more directly connected to modern careers, but history should not be ignored. A strong education should include both subjects. Science and technology can help us create a better future, while history helps us understand the past and make wiser decisions. Therefore, schools should give appropriate importance to both fields.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the importance of history and the value of science and technology. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay, concluding that both fields are essential. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of 'wars' and 'artificial intelligence'. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your arguments by exploring the long-term societal implications of these subjects in greater depth, rather than keeping the explanations relatively brief.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' to link your points effectively. The paragraphing is logical and helps the reader follow your argument. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between ideas is clear throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, which makes the writing easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'societies have developed', 'valuable lessons', and 'increasingly important' are used correctly. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, it remains somewhat functional. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items, such as 'technological paradigm' or 'historical consciousness', to show greater flexibility and stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your grammar is generally accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'By learning about wars, political changes, and important historical figures, young people can understand the reasons behind many current events.' The punctuation is also handled well. To move into the higher bands, ensure you consistently use a wider variety of complex structures with total accuracy, as the current range is solid but standard.
