Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people believe that history is one of the most significant school subjects, while others think that subjects like Science and technology are more prominent than history in present era. I personally believe that both the subjects have equal importance due to the fact that they teach widely different things. It is not justified to compare them as they complement each other.

On the one hand, history is a subject that is taught to children from early ages. It plays a significant role to develop their perspective about distinct historical areas such as wars, politics, civics, an social world. History consists of lessons and understandings from the past which teaches them bout the mistakes which happened, which should not repeat again. Moreover, we have known our culture from history itself, which was preserved over decades and centuries. Learning history develops a sense of curiosity to understand why a certain event happened and what were the consequences of it. The curiosity stages their brain to become active and mature.

On the other hand, with a rapidly evolving world, subjects like Science and technology are essentials to learn in order to keep ourselves updated. Presently, every sector demands knowledge and skills related to tech or science. In such a situation, it becomes extremely crucial to embed ourselves with expertise in this field. Our day-to-day life is being carried out by science with a small chip in our mobile phone to a large space rocket. Science is everywhere, and we must cope to live with it and evolve with it.

To conclude, although a greater number of people would side with any one subject, I concur that it is best to know both history and Science as one introduces culture and our events while the other provides us the path to evolve.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, particularly in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your arguments by providing more specific, concrete examples rather than general statements. For instance, when discussing the importance of history, you could mention how understanding historical conflicts helps modern diplomacy, or when discussing science, you could cite a specific technological advancement that has fundamentally changed society. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' to signal the structure of your argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied. To improve, ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother by using a wider range of linking words and avoiding repetitive sentence structures. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps the reader navigate your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significant', 'prominent', 'complement', and 'evolving'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'embed ourselves with expertise' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'stages their brain' (which is unclear). While you successfully communicate your ideas, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'embed ourselves', you might use 'equip ourselves' or 'acquire expertise'. Expanding your range of academic vocabulary will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout the essay. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'subjects like Science and technology are essentials' (should be 'essential'), 'teaches them bout the mistakes' (spelling error), and 'which was preserved' (should be 'have been preserved'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositions. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. To reach a higher band, aim for greater accuracy in complex structures and proofread carefully to eliminate minor slips in subject-verb agreement and word forms.
