Student answer (Band 5.5)

History is one of the most important curriculum in the school while some other sect of people may think that science and technology are more important than History.

As for the science and technology is concerned both are very important field in the modern world and both science and technology are dependent on each other, its because of science we were able to get this far in the world of technology. Science which can be further classified as Physics, Chemistry, & Biology are the fundamentals in helping the modern world achieving the technologies we see all around, In other words the study and understanding of these fundamentals led science to grow which eventually led technology to improve, it can be said that science and technology interdependent. Personally I believe that teaching history is important because to get to here we needed the support of history every now and then, for instance we took the help from the equations of great scientists like Einistine ,Plank and others for the betterment of todays' science and technology. It was with the help of the known history we were able to know about the innovations, proofs, and concepts, which could be used today, its because of history we were not put behind centuries or deprived of such knowledge which is still used for solving complex problems.

In conclusion, History or Science & tech both are essential and all are of same importance but without history it would have been difficult to get this type of achievement the world rests upon today.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the importance of science and technology, the explanation remains repetitive, focusing heavily on the interdependence of these two fields rather than contrasting them with history. The argument for history is also slightly underdeveloped, relying on a general assertion about 'great scientists' rather than exploring the broader societal or critical thinking benefits of historical study. To improve, ensure each paragraph provides distinct, well-supported arguments that directly address the prompt's core tension between the two subjects.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into three paragraphs, which is a minimal structure. The progression of ideas is sometimes difficult to follow due to run-on sentences and a lack of clear transition between the two viewpoints. For example, the transition between the discussion of science and your personal opinion on history is abrupt. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'In other words', 'In conclusion'), they are sometimes used mechanically or incorrectly. Improving the use of paragraphing to separate the two opposing views and using a wider variety of linking words would significantly enhance the flow and logical progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'very important field' and 'get this far'. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'one of the most important curriculum' (should be 'curricula') and 'put behind centuries'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more academic collocations and precise terminology related to education and scientific progress, while ensuring that your spelling of proper nouns, such as 'Einstein' and 'Planck', is accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Issues include run-on sentences, such as 'Science which can be further classified as Physics, Chemistry, & Biology are the fundamentals in helping the modern world achieving the technologies we see all around', where the subject-verb agreement and punctuation are problematic. Additionally, there are errors with articles and pluralization. To improve, focus on sentence boundary control—ensuring that each sentence expresses a complete thought—and proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation errors.
