Student answer (Band 6.0)

In modern times, the issue of choosing the most essential subject on school has become highly controversial. There are those who say that History is one of the most important subjects on school, however others believe that Science and technology are more important subject than History. In the essay I will examine both side of the argument and provide my overall opinion.

Generally speaking, there are two main reasons why people believe that the most significant subject on school is History. Perhaps the main reason why people are in favor of this idea is that studies at history help students to know the exact past of anything such as country, ancient civilizations, any big decisions and so on. As a result, analyzing past events related to any major life decision before making it enables us to take our next steps with awareness. A further point in favor of studying history is that it helps students understand their culture and heritage. By learning about their historical achievements, freedom fight and other things, they can develop deeper understanding about their own country. As a result, the students' love and respect for their own country will increase significantly.

Despite this argument, there is also a case for the idea that science and technology are more essential than history. The main reason why people think that this is a good idea is that the present age is the age of science and technology makes our life extremely easy. Studies on science and technology makes a student more creative. science and technology allow students to develop practical and technical skills that can be used in the workplace. For instance, in today's world, there are a lot of demands of skilled workers. if student can gain knowledge and proper skills then they will get a great opportunity on work field. As a result, the unemployment rate will decrease significantly.

In conclusion, it must be said that choosing subject has become a complex issue. Despite arguments to the contrary, I strongly believe that studies on science and technology will help a lot to a student in her future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the importance of History versus Science and technology—and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and supported with explanations, such as how history helps people understand their culture and how science and technology improve practical workplace skills. However, some arguments remain slightly under-developed and general, fitting the Band 6 or 7 profile well. For example, the point about historical freedom fights could be extended further. Overall, the prompt requirements are fully met with a clear position maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs discussing opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Generally speaking', 'Despite this argument', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and referencing is mostly clear, though some transitions like 'As a result' are slightly overused. The progression of ideas is generally coherent, placing the response solidly in the Band 7 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'controversial', 'ancient civilizations', and 'unemployment rate'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'subject on school' instead of 'subject at school' and 'studies at history' instead of 'the study of history'. While the vocabulary allows the message to be communicated clearly and attempts less common items, these recurring collocation and preposition errors prevent the score from reaching higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the response, particularly concerning subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'Studies on science and technology makes' (instead of 'make') and 'if student can gain' (instead of 'if students can gain'). Punctuation and capitalization errors, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('science and technology allow'), are also present. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response at a Band 6 level.
