IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals contend that History is one of the most significant subjects academically whereas others argue that in the contemporary world, subjects like Science and Technology are of greater importance than History. Both perspectives will be discussed in this essay along with my opinion.
People that believe History to be more important usually hold a view that knowledge of the past would help shape the future in a better way by teaching lessons that would prevent old mistakes from happening again. For instance, learning about colonization would help countries ensure it is not repeated and the actions to take in case it does. Furthermore, History teaches one about their culture, tradition, and the legacy left behind by their ancestors. It gives one a sense of self.
On the other hand, modern world has made learning Science and Technology inevitable as they are the future of human civilization. To elaborate, it has become more and more important to learn Technology even just to complete daily tasks as everything has become digital nowadays. For instance, every class has an online group now, college admissions require registering on numerous websites, work places have face recognition systems, and many more. Not being familiar with Science and Technology could lead to a large amount of problems. Moreover, Science and Technology are necessary for a new innovative world.
In my opinion, learning about Science and Technology is important. However, the significance of History cannot be completely dismissed as it is just as important, if not more.
In conclusion, learning about History provides innate and knowledge whereas Science and Technology are necessary for survival and innovation.

However, paragraphing could be managed better, as the personal opinion and conclusion are separated into very short, almost fragmented sections. Additionally, referencing is sometimes repetitive, and the progression within the final paragraphs feels slightly disjointed due to the lack of extended elaboration. Overall, the logical organisation and progression meet the criteria for a Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms like 'contemporary world', 'civilization', 'inevitable', and 'innovative'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but some word choices and collocations feel slightly unnatural or imprecise, such as 'innate and knowledge' in the conclusion, which is grammatically awkward and unclear. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and communication is never impeded by lexical inadequacies.
