Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the importance of history and the prominence of science and technology—and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the ideas lack sufficient depth and development. For instance, the arguments regarding history are repetitive and somewhat circular, such as 'people pay attention on history that help them to upgrade the their knowledge about history.' Similarly, the arguments for science and technology rely on general statements rather than well-supported examples. While the prompt is adequately answered, the limited elaboration and tendency to over-generalise place this performance at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into four distinct paragraphs, following a standard introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is an overall logical progression, and transitional markers such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to structure the text. However, cohesion at the sentence level is frequently faulty or mechanical. For example, referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are occasionally misused or repetitive, as seen in the transition 'In addition, Another significant reason is that...'. Furthermore, the concluding sentence is ungrammatical and fails to cohesively summarize the argument. These issues reflect the descriptors for Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student displays an adequate vocabulary for the task, attempting words and phrases such as 'significant', 'convenient', and 'advancement'. However, there are frequent errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'history is the significant school subjects' instead of 'subject', 'our past history' (redundancy), and 'survive in quality life'. Spelling and phrasing errors occur regularly, such as 'in this days' instead of 'these days' and 'search for the source of sufficient advancement'. Because these lexical errors are noticeable and occasionally cause slight strain for the reader, the response aligns with a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are numerous basic grammatical errors throughout the essay, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Everybody need to know', 'science help people'), incorrect articles ('a essential elements'), and tense/modal confusion ('what will be happen', 'to save from unknown incident'). Complex structures are often faulty, and punctuation errors, such as missing capitalization and run-on phrasing, are frequent. These persistent errors that cause difficulty place the grammatical performance at Band 5.0.
