Student answer (Band 6.0)

As far as this topic is concerned, I do agree that History is an important school subject. However, I believe that Science and technology are more important in today’s rapidly developing world because they provide practical knowledge and help societies progress.

Firstly, History plays an important role in education because it helps students understand the past. By learning about historical events, wars and important personalities, students can understand how their countries and societies developed. Moreover, history can teach valuable lessons and help people avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. Therefore, it should remain an important part of school education.

On the other hand, Science and technology are essential for modern life. Students can learn about medicine, computers, engineering and other useful fields through these subjects. For example, scientific knowledge has helped develop new medicines and technologies that improve people's quality of life. Furthermore, countries need skilled scientists and engineers to compete in the modern world and develop their economies.

In conclusion, although History is important because it helps students understand the past and learn from it, I believe that Science and technology are more important in today's world. Therefore, schools should give greater importance to these subjects while continuing to teach History.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether History or Science and technology are more important, and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, a major issue is the length requirement. The text contains only 203 words, which falls significantly short of the 250-word minimum. This results in under-developed arguments, particularly in the body paragraphs where ideas are introduced and supported briefly without sufficient depth or elaboration. Consequently, the response cannot be awarded a band score higher than 5.0 for Task Achievement due to the under-length penalty and the resulting under-development of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a clear overall structure with a recognizable introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a concluding summary. Logical progression is established through standard cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main idea assigned to its own paragraph. Referencing throughout the text is clear, and the flow of ideas from sentence to sentence is coherent. Despite the limited overall length, the internal organization of the writing meets the criteria for Band 6.0, as the arrangement of ideas is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'rapidly developing world', 'practical knowledge', 'historical events', and 'quality of life'. There are some attempts to use less common items, but word choice remains fairly standard and safe rather than ambitious. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate throughout the text, and errors do not impede communication. The lexical range is sufficient to convey the writer's meaning clearly, fitting the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic sentence structures and conjunctions. Examples such as 'Although History is important because it helps students understand the past and learn from it, I believe that Science and technology are more important' show an ability to construct multi-clause complex sentences. While there are some minor awkward phrasings, grammar and punctuation are generally accurate and rarely impede communication. The majority of the sentences are well-formed, supporting a Band 6.5 rating for this criterion.
