Student answer (Band 6.0)

The topic issue has sparked considerable debate in recent years. Some are of the opinion that history is one of the most important subjects, whereas others hold diametrically opposing point of view argue that in today's world studying science and technology-related subjects are more vital. This essay will examine both sides before reaching a well-informed conclusion.

On the one hand, many people believe that learning scientific subjects are crucial in recent years. One key reason behind this viewpoint is that learning science enables students to develop critical thinking abilities. This is underpinned by groundbreaking research conducted by some prominent student researchers of MIT. Additionally, those in favor of this stance propound that studying scientific subjects creates better job opportunities as almost every industrial sector is somehow related to science. Evidence from educational systems such as the Bangladesh Central University faculty reveals that students who graduated from the tech department tend to have a higher acceptance rate than the others in the job market.

On the other hand, it is frequently asserted that history is one of the prestigious subjects to study. One of the main justifications for this opinion is that history broadens the horizon of knowledge because learners have to study about different timelines and related incidents. A clear example of this can be seen in the department of history where students have the opportunity to learn different historical events. Furthermore those who support this belief contend that it gives them an edge when it comes to serving humanity or holding a leading position, which requires comprehensive knowledge about past happenings.

After examining both sides of the arguments, I am convinced that studying scientific subjects can be more beneficial. One compelling reason why this standpoint is more effective is that today people are finding it challenging to solve real-world problems; as a result, the demand for problem-solving individuals has increased. This is why I think science has become an indispensable subject.

In conclusion, although the opposing arguments cannot be dismissed entirely, the evidence clearly supports the view that studying science and technology today is more important than history

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on the importance of history versus science and technology, and clearly presents the writer's own opinion in the body and conclusion. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay. The ideas are generally well developed and supported with relevant reasoning, such as the discussion on critical thinking and problem-solving skills, although some examples, such as referencing a specific university faculty, are slightly underdeveloped. The main argument flows logically from the introduction to the final conclusion, ensuring that the task requirements are thoroughly met. This performance aligns comfortably with Band 7 standards, as all parts of the prompt are addressed with a clear position and extended ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with a distinct introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint and the personal opinion, and a concluding paragraph. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments. However, referencing is occasionally slightly mechanical, and certain transitional phrases could be more smoothly integrated. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the essay, meeting the criteria for a Band 7 performance in Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, employing terms such as 'groundbreaking research', 'indispensable', and 'diametrically opposing'. There are, however, some slight inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'The topic issue has sparked considerable debate' and 'point of view argue'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style, but occasional errors prevent the score from reaching a higher band. Spelling and word choice errors do not impede communication, placing this response solidly within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, warranting a 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating an attempt to use varied grammatical forms. There are, nevertheless, noticeable grammatical errors, particularly in subject-verb agreement and clause construction, such as 'learning scientific subjects are crucial' and 'point of view argue that... are more vital'. Despite these recurring errors, the meaning remains clear and they do not impede communication. The control over punctuation and simpler sentences is generally adequate, but the frequency of non-systematic errors in complex sentences keeps the score at Band 6.
