Student answer (Band 6.5)

The topic issue has sparked considerable debate in recent years. Some are of the opinion that history is one of the most important subjects, whereas others holding a diametrically opposing point of view and arguing that in today's world studying science and technology-related subjects is more vital. This essay will examine both sides before reaching a well-informed conclusion.

On the one hand, many people believe that learning scientific subjects is crucial in recent years. One key reason behind this viewpoint is that learning science enables students to develop critical thinking abilities. This is underpinned by groundbreaking research conducted by some prominent student researchers of MIT. Additionally, those in favor of this stance propound that studying scientific subjects creates better job opportunities as almost every industrial sector is somehow related to science. Evidence from educational systems such as the Bangladesh Central University faculty reveals that students who graduated from the tech department tend to have a higher acceptance rate than the others in the job market.

On the other hand, it is frequently asserted that history is one of the most prestigious subjects to study. One of the main justifications for this opinion is that history broadens the horizon of knowledge because learners have to study about different timelines and related incidents. A clear example of this can be seen in the department of history where students have the opportunity to learn different historical events. Furthermore those who support this belief contend that it gives them an edge when it comes to serving humanity or holding a leading position, which requires comprehensive knowledge about past happenings.

After examining both sides of the arguments, I am convinced that studying scientific subjects can be more beneficial. One compelling reason why this standpoint is more effective is that today people are finding it challenging to solve real-world problems; as a result, the demand for problem-solving individuals has increased. This is why I think science has become an indispensable subject.

In conclusion, although the opposing arguments cannot be dismissed entirely, the evidence clearly supports the view that studying science and technology today is more important than history

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the importance of history versus science and technology—and provides a clear personal opinion in the body and conclusion. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay. Ideas are generally well-supported, such as mentioning critical thinking and job opportunities for science subjects, and the broadening of knowledge for history. However, some supporting points lean slightly on generalizations or circular phrasing, such as 'learners have to study about different timelines and related incidents,' which prevents the score from reaching a higher band. Overall, the task is fully covered with clear idea development and adequate extension.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with a standard introduction, followed by body paragraphs addressing science and history respectively, a clear opinion paragraph, and a concise conclusion. Standard cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Furthermore.' Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their introductory phrasings, placing this response comfortably at the Band 7 level where logical progression and clear paragraphing are well-maintained.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision with terms like 'diametrically opposing point of view,' 'groundbreaking research,' 'indispensable subject,' and 'comprehensive knowledge.' Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, although minor infelicities occur, such as 'topic issue' in the opening sentence. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the response, and word choices do not impede communication. The vocabulary control aligns well with the Band 7 descriptor, showing sufficient breadth and appropriate styling for an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, utilizing relative clauses, conditional ideas, and participial phrases effectively. There are many error-free sentences, showing good overall control of grammar and punctuation. However, a few minor errors and awkward framings persist, notably in the second sentence where the student writes 'whereas others holding a diametrically opposing point of view and arguing,' which lacks a finite verb form. Despite this slip, punctuation is managed correctly, and the majority of sentences are constructed accurately, supporting a solid Band 7 score for grammar.
