Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often debated whether history remains a vital school subject or if modern education should prioritize science and technology. While learning about the past helps people understand societal development, I completely agree that science and technology are far more important in today's rapidly changing world.
On the one hand, supporters of history argue that it plays an essential role in understanding human culture, national identity, and governance. Studying historical events allows students to see how modern laws, political systems, and social structures were developed over time. By analyzing past mistakes and successes, future leaders can make better decisions when addressing contemporary social issues. Furthermore, learning history broadens students' perspectives, helping them appreciate different cultures and traditions across generations. For example, understanding international history helps citizens comprehend current global relations and avoid repeating past conflicts.
On the other hand, science and technology have become far more critical for addressing the practical demands and urgent challenges of modern society. Studying scientific subjects equips students with logical problem-solving and critical thinking skills that are necessary to tackle major global issues, such as climate change, medical emergencies, and renewable energy production. In addition, the modern job market heavily favors candidates with technical expertise. Graduates in fields like computer science, software engineering, and biotechnology generally enjoy wider career opportunities and higher starting salaries than those who major in humanities, making science essential for personal and economic growth.
In conclusion, although studying history provides valuable cultural awareness and crucial lessons from the past, I believe that science and technology are ultimately more important today. Prioritizing technical subjects better prepares students for the competitive workforce and gives society the necessary tools to solve complex real-world problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the importance of history for culture and governance, and the priority of science and technology for modern problem-solving and the job market—while clearly stating a personal position in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are well developed and supported with relevant examples, such as climate change, medical emergencies, and global relations. The writer maintains a clear position throughout, meeting the Band 8 descriptor as all parts of the prompt are covered thoroughly and extended with appropriate reasoning.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to the arguments for history, the counter-arguments for science and technology, and finally a well-synthesized conclusion. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore', ensuring that relationships between ideas are clearly signaled. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, satisfying the Band 8 standard for cohesion and overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student displays a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic discussion. Less common items and collocations are used skillfully, such as 'societal development', 'contemporary social issues', 'technical expertise', and 'economic growth'. Word choices are precise, and there are only occasional inaccuracies or awkward phrasings. The lexical range is more than sufficient to allow smooth progression of complex ideas, comfortably meeting the criteria for a Band 7.5 or 8.0, though occasional slightly standard academic phrasing keeps it firmly anchored at a strong Band 7.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response exhibits a wide range of complex structures used with a high degree of accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, featuring sophisticated subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'By analyzing past mistakes and successes, future leaders can make better decisions...' and 'Graduates in fields like computer science... generally enjoy wider career opportunities...'. Punctuation and grammatical control are consistently strong throughout the essay, with only very occasional minor slips, which aligns well with the Band 8 descriptors.
