Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals argue that History is one of the most crucial school subjects, while others believe that nowadays subjects like Science and Technology are more important rather than History. While it is true that History is an important subjects in school, I believe that Science and Technology is more crucial than History.

The people who argue that History is one of the most important subjects to study in schools give the following reasons. Firstly, by syudying history students can learn about the cultures and traditions of a nation, allowing them to enrich their knowledge as well as broaden their minds. Secondly, if students study in history, they can learn about the mistakes which are made by our ancestors. So, they can learn from the mistakes and be able to make the right decisions. Another possible reasons is that when a student read a historical interesting story about a successful person, this story may encourage the student to become successful in life.

In contrast, there are several reasons why Science and Technology is more important than history. First of all, we live in the era on cutting-edge technology. Thus, people tend to become innovative and creative by using modern science and technology. Thats why the government has added many subjects related to science and technology and many students feel interested in this trend. Students can become more productive and efficient by reading subjects like science and technology. Secondly, the modern technology helps to develop the medical and transportation sectors, which encourages people to learn more about modern science and technology. By studying in science and technology, a student can be a doctor or an engineer and he may contribute to develop the healthcare or arcitecture sectors. For instance, my elder brother study in medical college and now he is a surgeon. He provides free treatments to the poor people.

To sum up, although History is a very crucial subjects to study, I firmly believe that there are more opportunities to contribute in society by studying science and technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on the importance of school subjects and clearly stating their own opinion that science and technology are more crucial. The response presents a clear position throughout. The ideas are extended and supported, particularly in the body paragraphs where reasons such as cultural understanding, avoiding past mistakes, and career opportunities in medical and architectural sectors are provided. However, there is a tendency to slightly over-generalise and some of the supporting details are a bit repetitive or anecdotal (e.g., the specific mention of the elder brother), which keeps the response at a Band 7 level rather than higher.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response features a clear overall logical organisation and progression. The introduction outlines the topic and stance, followed by well-defined paragraphs discussing each view, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In contrast'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, with minor issues like repetitive transitional markers and slightly awkward phrasing (e.g., 'Another possible reasons is that when a student read...'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but the overall flow can feel somewhat formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'cutting-edge technology', 'innovative and creative', and 'architectural sectors'. However, there are notable instances of inappropriate word choice, spelling errors ('syudying', 'reasons' instead of 'reason', 'arcitecture'), and awkward collocations (e.g., 'subjects like science and technology', 'reading subjects like science'). While communication is never impeded, these inaccuracies and spelling mistakes prevent the response from reaching Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'While it is true that History is an important subjects in school, I believe that...' and 'although History is a very crucial subjects to study...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('History is an important subjects', 'crucial subjects'), incorrect prepositions ('study in history', 'study in science and technology'), and punctuation errors. These errors occur regularly but rarely impede overall communication, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
