Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals argue that studying History should be an integral part of school education, while others argue about the relevance and importance of Science and technology.

Importance of different subjects which should be taught to students at school is a very debatable topic.

One part of society focuses on subjects like History which explains the importance of past events in our society. They believe that it is important for children to have awareness about the past. History highlights the mistakes and wrong decisions made in past which can facilitate the understanding of many situations and conflicts in present time which are a result of those. For example many countries have land area conflicts because of past judgements. History helps in anyalysing the incorrect steps taken and learn from them.

The other part of society believes teaching Science and technology to students is more important. Firstly, Science is more popular as a subject and is considered prestigious by many and hence it is more popular. Secondly, in today's era where every country is moving towards technology, studying science is much more relevant to present scenario.

Lastly, the employment opportunities offered in the field of science and technology are unlimited which makes it a more sensible choice.

In my opinion both History and Science are interesting subjects depending upon an individual's interest. I believe that Schools should offer a balanced curriculum where students can choose what they wish to study rather then making pupils learn because of compulsion. This can hinder learning and also affect the students desire to study.Having a well planned course helps students of all types enjoy learning at their own pace.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the importance of History and the significance of Science and technology—and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant and supported with explanations, such as how History helps in understanding past conflicts and land area disputes, while Science offers better employment opportunities. However, some arguments feel slightly under-developed; for instance, the point about Science being prestigious lacks deeper elaboration. The student takes a clear stance that a balanced curriculum should be offered rather than compulsion, which is well maintained. Overall, the task is adequately covered, aligning well with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 requirements, earning a solid Band 6.5 for addressing the prompt adequately despite some generalisation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a conclusion containing the writer's opinion. Paragraphing is utilised sufficiently to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to structure the points, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional awkward phrasing affects the flow slightly, such as 'One part of society focuses on subjects like History...'. Progression is logical, moving smoothly from the arguments for History to those for Science and finally to the personal recommendation. This places the response comfortably within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 descriptor range, achieving a Band 6.5 for generally clear organisation despite some mechanical cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'integral part', 'debatable topic', 'prestige', and 'employment opportunities'. However, there are notable spelling and word choice inaccuracies, such as spelling 'analysing' as 'anyalysing', and repetitive use of words like 'popular' and 'important'. Collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'present time' instead of 'the present time' or 'present times'. Despite these lexical slips and minor spelling errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor criteria for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'History highlights the mistakes and wrong decisions made in past which can facilitate the understanding...'. However, there are frequent minor errors in punctuation and grammar, including missing articles ('in past', 'in present time', 'in science and technology'), incorrect prepositions, and a run-on structure in the final paragraph ('rather then making pupils learn because of compulsion. This can hinder learning...'). While these errors are noticeable and detract from precision, they rarely impede overall communication. The mix of structures and error frequency place this text firmly at the Band 6.0 level.
