Student answer (Band 6.0)

According to some beliefs, among the school subjects, History is one the most crucial one, while other beliefs recommend that Science and Technology subjects have way more importance than the former one. In my opinion, Science and technology should hold the leading position in accordance with the modern world because the students should be able to adjust with the accelerated advancement of Science and Technology by learning them.

It is argued that History can be prioritized in the school subjects because the most effective way of learning how the real world steps forward is learning about History. Besides, It teaches us about the contribution of some familiar figures towards mankind and also the mistakes made by them, which can be a valuable knowledge to us. Finally, we get to use the knowledge in the current world. For example, incidents in Cernobyl nuclear power plant teache us about the mistakes made by engineers at that time and the findings are now applied to the recent nuclear power plants.

Despite the factors stated above, I believe, History can not surpass the significance of Science and Technology in terms of learning. Firstly, Science and Technology is the leading two fields in the current world. Among many wonderful inventions, artifiicial intelligence is one of them, which have lessened the human labour for many fields that many top companies are recruiting artifcial intelligence instead of human. In this current world. students have to run with the new knowledge and innovations at the same pace.

In conclusion, there are many people who believe History should be regarded as the most vital school subject. But in terms with the ongoing developments of the technology, I believe, Science and technology should have the top priority.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the importance of history and the primacy of science and technology—and presents a clear personal position throughout. In the first body paragraph, the writer outlines the arguments for history, such as understanding the real world and learning from past mistakes, citing the Chernobyl nuclear power plant as a relevant example. The second body paragraph defends the opposing view by highlighting the dominance of modern fields like artificial intelligence. While the ideas are relevant and supported, some points, such as the discussion on artificial intelligence replacing human labor, remain slightly underdeveloped and tend to over-generalise. Overall, the task is well addressed, aligning closely with the requirements for a Band 6.5 or Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall arrangement with logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'Besides', 'Finally', 'For example', and 'Despite the factors stated above' are employed to connect ideas, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as starting multiple sentences with 'I believe'. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional minor cohesion slips prevent the text from achieving a higher band. Overall, the organisational structure is coherent and meets the criteria for Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'accelerated advancement', 'contribution', and 'artificial intelligence'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as writing 'one the most crucial one' instead of 'one of the most crucial ones', 'adjust with' instead of 'adjust to', and 'in terms with' instead of 'in terms of'. Additionally, spelling errors occur, notably 'Cernobyl' and 'artifiicial'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they reflect the characteristics of Band 6 vocabulary use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several structural and agreement errors, such as 'Science and Technology is the leading two fields' (subject-verb agreement), 'History can not surpass' (spacing/modal usage), and redundant phrasing like 'artifiicial intelligence is one of them, which have lessened'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent minor errors persist throughout the sentences. Because these errors do not severely impede comprehension, the writing fits comfortably into the Band 6 descriptor.
