IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The curriculum at schools often provide a mix of subjects including history, science and technology. Proponents believe that the importance of science preceeds history and therefore schools should focus less on the same. While others believe History is as important as any other subject. I would argue that these subjects are equally important.

An understanding of both global and local history is an essential part of learning. One's knowledege of the past plays a significant role in shaping their present individual identity while, the collective knowledge of history plays a role in the development of sociteal identity. History also plays a role in the preservation of our ancestral culture and traditions. An understanding of our history provides a better insight into our current day geopolitical relationships; which in turn helps in the curation of our current day policies. Therefore, while many might undermine the importance of this subject in todays modern world it is absolutely essential that it is taught in schools.

In our rapidly changing world which is evolving towards fields like AI, biotechnology and biomedical engineering; an understanding of science and technology has become indispensable. This knowledge is not only essential to those involved in developing these emerging fields but also for those who use these technology. A thorough understanding of these subjects is essential to identify potential security threats and contribute to the safe development and use of AI and other healthcare technology.

I believe that subjects such as history, science, and technology are equally important for students, as each provides distinct benefits. Therefore, schools should strive to maintain a balanced curriculum that gives adequate attention to both the humanities and scientific disciplines.

However, there are a few noticeable spelling errors ('preceeds' instead of 'precedes', 'knowledege' instead of 'knowledge', 'sociteal' instead of 'societal', 'todays' instead of 'today's') and occasional minor issues with word choice. Despite these lexical slips, the vocabulary allows the message to be conveyed successfully, placing this safely in the Band 6.5 to 7 range, rounding to 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
