Many people face this issue in their daily lives, and it can influence their lifestyle in different ways. For example, it may affect people’s work, education, health, or relationships. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The student has failed to meet the minimum length requirement, writing only 180 words instead of the required 250 words, which incurs a severe penalty for Task Achievement. Furthermore, the response is entirely template-based and generic, containing placeholder markers like [TOPIC] instead of discussing the actual prompt regarding whether History is more important than Science and technology. The student completely ignores both views specified in the prompt and fails to present any position or arguments related to the subject matter. Consequently, the task is addressed only minimally and tangentially, matching the descriptors for Band 4.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into three paragraphs with a standard organizational structure, including introductory and concluding remarks, as well as cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion'. However, because the content relies on generic template phrases with placeholders like [TOPIC], the logical progression breaks down when examined against the actual prompt. Paragraphing is used, but the overall progression lacks genuine substance related to the topic. Due to the mechanical application of cohesion without topical relevance, this criterion is rated at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used in the response is extremely repetitive and basic, relying heavily on vague phrases such as 'this topic', 'different ways', 'this situation', and 'the situation'. There are no less common lexical items attempted in relation to the specific prompt, and terms like [TOPIC] highlight the lack of appropriate subject-related vocabulary. While the spelling and basic word formation are generally accurate, the limited and repetitive range of vocabulary severely restricts communication of specific ideas. This performance aligns closely with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates control over simple and some complex sentence structures, such as conditional structures ('it mainly depends on how people use it') and relative clauses. Grammatical accuracy in terms of basic clause structure, punctuation, and subject-verb agreement is reasonably well maintained throughout the short text. There are very few grammatical errors in the actual sentences produced, showing adequate control of basic grammar despite the lack of topical content. Therefore, a band score of 6.0 is awarded for this criterion.
