Student answer (Band 6.0)
Although there is a school of thought that why people think History is important, an alternative perspective contends that why people think Science and Technology are more important. While both argument posses a certain degree of validity, I am firmly of the opinion that Science and Technology are more important in today's world. This essay will critically examine both perspective before elucidating why I subscribe to this particular standpoint.
To commence with, there are several compelling arguments in favour of History is an important school subject. First and foremost, to understand the past and culture. This can primarily be attributed to the fact that students can learn about wars, important events and decisions made by previous generations. A pertinent example of this can be seen in World war 2, where students can learn causes and consequences of war, understand dangers of conflict and avoid repeating mistakes. Consequently, better understanding of society and avoid past mistakes.
Furthermore, another noteworthy consideration is that History develops culture awareness. In essence, students can learn about different cultures, traditions and civilizations. This is perticularly significant because it helps students respect different cultures.
Nevertheless, the opposing perspective also warrents careful consideration. One os the most compelling arguments is that Science and Technology solve modern problems. The underlying reason is that technology improve heathcare facilities like better diagnosis, treatment. For instance, because of high medical technology vaccines of different disease is easier to develop. This, in turn, can lead to better healthcare, improve quality of life.
Moreover, it is worth emphasising that science and technology improve education and communication. This is largely attributed to internet. As a result, better online learning platflorms. As a consequence, students can learn from anywhere and have better educational opportunities. This eventually help society.
In conclusion, although History plays an important role in education, I believe that Science and Technology are more important in today's world. This is because they help solve modern problems and improve people's quality of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the importance of History versus the prominence of Science and Technology—and clearly states a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, although some points in the body paragraphs tend to be somewhat repetitive or lack full extension. For example, the arguments regarding history are valid, touching on culture and avoiding past mistakes, but could be supported with deeper analytical explanation rather than brief lists. Similarly, the points on technology covering healthcare and education are logical and supported by examples such as vaccines and online learning platforms. The writer maintains a clear position throughout, aligning with the Band 7 descriptor for addressing all parts of the task with a clear position and supported ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct introduction, body, and concluding sections. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'Nevertheless'. However, there are some mechanical or awkward transitions, such as 'First and foremost, to understand the past and culture', which functions as a sentence fragment rather than a fully cohesive clause. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional repetition in sentence structure affects the flow. Progression is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 6 to 7 range. Because the organisational structure is logical and progression is clear despite minor mechanical elements, a score of 6.5 is well-justified.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'elucidating', 'pertinently', and 'contemporary-related terms' like 'vaccines', 'diagnosis', and 'healthcare facilities'. However, there are frequent word-choice errors, grammatical infelicities, and missing parts of speech. For instance, the student writes 'both argument posses' instead of 'arguments possess', uses 'perticularly' (misspelling of particularly), and creates incomplete noun phrases like 'technology improve heathcare facilities'. Additionally, expressions such as 'warrents careful consideration' show minor spelling inaccuracies. While the lexical resource is sufficient to communicate meaning clearly, the frequency of word-form and spelling errors places this firmly at Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting subordinations with clauses like 'Although there is a school of thought that why people think...' and 'A pertinent example of this can be seen in World war 2, where students can learn...'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are numerous structural errors, such as redundant phrasing ('contends that why people think'), missing subjects or verbs in fragments ('First and foremost, to understand the past and culture'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('technology improve heathcare facilities'). Punctuation and article usage also show frequent lapses. These errors occasionally disrupt the reading flow, though they rarely impede overall communication. This mix of complex structures alongside frequent grammatical slips corresponds to a Band 6.
