IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this contemporary world, there is an ongoing debate about which subject should recieve greater importance in school education. Some people believe that History is one of the most important subject because it help us to understand past events, while others argue that Science and Technology are the more significant because their practical importance in modern society. Although both views have valid arguments, I believe that Science and Technology should have greater emphasis because they contribute directly to innovation, econimic development and improvement in peoples quality of life.

On the one hand, some people argue that History to be one of the most important school subjects because it enables students to understand past and learn previous events. By studing wars, conflicts, pandemics and major historical development, students can understand the causes and consequences of past mistakes and avoid repeating similar mistakes in future. For example, learning about world war 2 can help student to understand devasting consequences of conflicts and importance of maintaining peace between nations. History also teaches students about customs, traditions and national heritage, which can strengthen their national identity. However, I disagree that History should be considered most important than Science and Technology because its benefits are related with past while science and technology knowlege is essential for addressing present and future challenges.

On the aothe hand, I believe that Science and technology are more important in today's life and provide practical skill to students. Scientific research has contributed in medicines, transportation, communication, energy and education, while technological developments helps individual to adapt to increasingly digital society. For instance, scientific research has enabled the development of life-saving medicines and vaccines, while technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital learning platforms have transformed the way people work and study.In addition, study of science, engeneering and digital technology can provide students with valuable skills for a competitive employment market. I strongly agree that Science and Technology deserve greater emphasis because it not only contemporary problems but also promote innovation, living quality and support economic progress.

In conclusion, although History is most important school subject because learn from past and preserve culture, I believe that Science and Technology should receive greater emphasis. History provides valuable knowledge about previous conflicts, traditions, and societies, whereas Science and Technology offer practical solutions to modern problems and prepare students for future careers.

However, there are minor cohesive flaws, such as the misspelling 'aothe' and some mechanical transitions, which place it firmly at Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'contemporary world', 'pandemics', 'consequences', 'artificial intelligence', and 'competitive employment market'. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'recieve', 'econimic', 'knowlege', 'engeneering', and awkward phrasings like 'living quality' instead of 'quality of life'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score to a Band 6.0 because the precision required for higher bands is lacking.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses introduced by 'although', 'because', and 'while'. There are frequent error-free sentences, demonstrating a reasonable level of grammatical control. However, persistent minor errors occur throughout the text, such as missing articles ('help student to understand devasting consequences'), subject-verb agreement issues ('technological developments helps'), and minor prepositional mistakes. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear and communication is not impeded, perfectly aligning with the Band 6 descriptors.
