Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the modern world, opinions differ on whether history is as relevant as other subjects taught in school, which are more aligned with science and technology. While it is one of the most important subjects according to a segment of people, others strongly doubt it's value in front of scientific subjects. I would strongly argue in favour of modern technology and science being a significantly important subject than history.
To begin with, we shall never demean history as a subject. It gives us a clear picture of human evolution, the rise of empires throughout the world, the socio-economic development of people dwelling in different regions. All these information add up to set the tone of the political, economic and social scenario of the modern world. The social and behavioural evolution of human from prehistoric times till present is often ignored by Science, making this an important segment where history prevails supreme.
However, the importance of science and technology are humongous in terms of taking mankind to new heights. Every discovery, every invention have contributed significantly to build a better future. For example, science was a major catalyst behind a few historically significant events, like mass industrialisation and French Revolution. The invention of aircraft has massively cut down the commuting time, whereas the discovery of nuclear elements as a source of energy is quite pivotal for the future world. All these add up to make the subject of science and modern technology pivotal for fighting against the ongoing issues and shaping a better tomorrow through innovation.
In conclusion, we can say that the subjects of history and science complement each other. History tells us about our glorious past, and science builds the pathway to a more sustainable future. Based on the above discussion, we should acknowledge the importance of history but ultimately admit that subjects related to science and modern technology are much more important at present.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the importance of history and the preeminence of science and technology—while clearly stating the writer's own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported well, such as the discussion on human evolution in the second paragraph and the examples of industrialisation and the invention of aircraft in the third paragraph. While the arguments are well-developed, there is a slight tendency to generalise in the conclusion regarding how subjects complement each other before reverting to the final stance. Overall, the task is fulfilled competently, aligning with a Band 7 performance descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay has a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from introduction to discussing history, then science and technology, and finally concluding. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitional phrases can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or over-used, such as starting multiple sentences with 'All these' or 'All these add up'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, maintaining overall readability. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 7 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for some flexibility and precision, using less common items such as 'socio-economic development', 'prehistoric times', and 'mass industrialisation'. There are, however, some minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'doubt it's value' (should be its) and 'science and technology are humongous' ('humongous' is too informal for an academic essay). Furthermore, the phrase 'significantly important subject than history' contains a slight collocation mismatch. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings without impeding communication, representing a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0, leaning towards a 6.5 due to stylistic lapses.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student produces a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing ('While it is one of the most important subjects...'). There are some noticeable grammatical errors, notably the missing apostrophe in 'it's value' and a subject-verb agreement slip in 'every discovery, every invention have contributed' (should be has contributed). Another minor slip is 'human evolution... the social and behavioural evolution of human' where 'human' should be pluralised as 'humans'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences are error-free, which corresponds well to the Band 6 descriptor.
