Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on the importance of History versus Science and Technology, and clearly states the writer's own opinion that both are equally important. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is limited and sometimes confused, particularly with unconvincing examples (e.g., attributing the invention of gravity and electricity to history classes). While the main arguments are identifiable, they tend to be repetitive and lack deep elaboration, placing the response solidly at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing basic paragraphing structure. However, the overall progression is somewhat hampered by repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions (e.g., 'To begin with', 'To explain', 'As an effects'). Cohesive devices are frequently mechanical or inaccurate, and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as pronoun ambiguity ('that help that student'). While paragraphing is attempted, the lack of smooth logical flow and awkward linking devices mean the coherence aligns best with a Band 5.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The lexical resource is limited and heavily impacted by frequent spelling errors, such as 'arguement' for argument, 'reagarding' for regarding, 'foundamental' for fundamental, 'indepandancy' for independency, 'knoeledge' for knowledge, 'eletricity' for electricity, 'technlolgy' for technology, 'weel' for well, 'thenchually' for eventually, 'tham' for them, 'feature' for future, 'casier' for easier, 'hisotry' for history, and 'tought' for taught. While the student attempts to use some less common words like 'essential' and 'critical thinking', the high density of basic spelling and word-formation errors impedes communication in places, resulting in a Band 4.5 or 5.0 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are almost invariably marred by persistent errors in basic grammar, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation (e.g., 'subjects like traditional and modern both are equally important', 'history help us to known', 'if students do not have like history'). Punctuation is frequently misused, with spaces placed before commas and full stops throughout the text. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 4.0 level.
