Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's world, some people believe that History is one of the most important school subjects, while others argue that subjects like Science and technology are more important. In my opinion, subjects like Science and technology help to develop unique products and solutions, so this kind of subject is more important.

On the one hand, people believe that History is one of the most important subject because it allows students to know the culture of ancient times. This is because a student may only know history of the world through the subject taught in the school. For example, this subject helps student to learn how the ancient people created fire from stones, how they took shether without homes, and so on. They may also know about the king and queen who took control over their country. All these knowledge help them in their overall development. As a result, History helps students to gain knowledge about ancient people. Additionally, it also helps students to know about the evolution of human beings and other things. They can know about how human evolved from an animal. Also, it helps them to learn about how the people have developed technologies over the years, from riding on animals to riding on vehicles.

On the other hand, critics argue that subjects like Science and technology encourage students to create a strong foundation in the techonology field. This may help them to improve academic grades and get admission in top ranking colleges, which helps them to make a better future. Therefore, gaining knowledge about Science and technology helps children to create strong foundation of their career path at a young age. Furthermore, studying Science and technology subject in school helps a country to create innovative solutions. This is because if students learn about technologies at a young age, this encourages them to gain more knowledge about technologies and even lead to create some innovative options. This approach helps countries to involve young minds in the field, which leads to create innovative solutions.

In conclusion, teaching History in schools allows students to know about the culture of ancient times and evolution of human beings. However, subjects like Science and technology help students to create strong foundation of their career path at a young age and encourage them to create innovative solutions. I believe that subjects like Science and technology are more important in current scenario.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether History or Science and technology are more important school subjects, and clearly states a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning how history helps students learn about ancient cultures and human evolution, and how science and technology encourage innovative solutions and career foundations. However, there is a tendency to over-generalize and some arguments are slightly repetitive, particularly the points regarding technology creating innovative solutions. Overall, the response meets the criteria for Band 6.5 or a solid Band 6 as it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, though some parts are slightly under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response features a clear overall arrangement with a four-paragraph structure that follows standard essay conventions. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, moving from the introduction to the two body paragraphs discussing each view, and ending with a clear conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion'. However, some referencing is occasionally repetitive or mechanical, such as the frequent repetition of 'This is because' and 'This helps'. Paragraphing is used appropriately and supports the progression of ideas, placing this response comfortably at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'overall development', 'evolution of human beings', and 'innovative solutions'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'shether' instead of 'shelter', 'techonology', and awkward phrasings like 'current scenario' instead of 'the current scenario' or 'today's world'. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is never impeded, and meaning is easily conveyed. These characteristics align well with the Band 6 descriptor for Lexical Resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures present, such as 'All these knowledge help them' (subject-verb agreement error), 'how human evolved' (missing article or pluralization), and 'lead to create' instead of 'lead to creating'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors in grammar and punctuation do occur, they rarely impede communication. This balance of a mixed structural range and frequent minor errors places the essay at Band 6.0.
