Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, some people believe that History is one of the most important school subjects, while others argue that subjects like Science and technology are more important than History. In my opinion, subjects like Science and technology are more important for students to build their career path and create innovative solutions.

On the one hand, people believe that History is one of the most important school subjects because it allows students to know about the culture of ancient times. This is because students may only gain knowledge of the history of the world through various subjects taught in the schools. For example, History allows students to know how the the ancient people created fire from stones, how they took shelter without homes, and so on. As a result, History helps students to know about the ancient people. Additionally, history encourages students to know about the evolution of human beings. They can know about how humans evolved from an animal and about the kings and queens who took control over their country. Also, they may able to know about how the technologies evolved over the years, from riding on animals to riding on vehicles.

On the other hand, critics argue that subjects like Science and technology helps students to create a strong foundation for their career path at a young age. If a student learns about various technologies, this may encourage them to create a strong foundation that helps them to get admission in top ranking colleges. This may allow them to make a better future. Furthermore, teaching subjects like Science and technology help a country to create some innovative solutions. This is because if children learn about technology, this may encourage them to gain more knowledge of it and even lead to create innovative solutions. This approach allows countries to involve young minds in various fields, which leads to create innovative technologies.

In conclusion, History allows students to know about the culture of ancient times and the evolution of human beings. However, subjects like Science and technology allows students to create a strong foundation and may encourage them to develop innovative solutions. I believe that subjects like Science and technology are more important because of its benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student has successfully addressed all parts of the task. Both views—the importance of History versus the prominence of Science and technology—are discussed in dedicated body paragraphs. Furthermore, the writer clearly states their own opinion in the introduction and reiterates it in the conclusion. Ideas are relevant and supported with explanations, such as discussing ancient fire-making and career foundations. However, some ideas border on repetition and slight over-generalisation, particularly in the lengthy historical examples. To reach a higher band, the development could be slightly more concise and sophisticated. Overall, the response meets the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0, and is rounded to Band 7.0 for fully covering all prompt requirements with a clear position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation with a traditional four-paragraph structure. Introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion are distinctly separated. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion.' However, there is some mechanical usage and repetition of linking structures and phrases (e.g., repeatedly using 'This is because' and 'This may allow'). Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a discernible progression of ideas throughout the text. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional mechanical transitions prevent the cohesion from feeling fully natural. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range, warranting a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terms like 'evolution of human beings,' 'career path,' 'innovative solutions,' and 'foundation.' There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but some word choices and collocations feel slightly unnatural or repetitive, such as 'take control over their country' or 'get admission in top ranking colleges' (instead of 'into'). Spelling is generally accurate, but lexical flexibility is somewhat limited. The occasional lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures ('If a student learns...') and relative clauses ('who took control...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing patterns throughout the essay. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'Science and technology helps' and 'subjects like Science and technology allows,' as well as redundant modal combinations ('may able to know'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent minor grammatical inaccuracies persist. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they prevent the essay from achieving a higher band score, making Band 6.0 an accurate assessment.
