Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on whether History or Science and Technology are more important, and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are generally relevant, such as mentioning human evolution for history and medical advancements for science. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and occasionally hindered by expression issues, placing it firmly at Band 6. For example, the argument regarding science bringing about war machines is introduced rather abruptly without sufficient elaboration. Despite these minor under-developments, the main requirements of the task are met clearly and directly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing is not always clear. There are several punctuation and spacing errors that disrupt the flow of reading, such as spaces before commas and missing spaces after full stops. Furthermore, transitional phrases are occasionally misused or repetitive, resulting in a somewhat mechanical progression of ideas, which aligns with the characteristics of a Band 6 performance.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'evolution', 'cutting edge technology', and 'enhancement'. However, there are frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'wether', 'subjectes', 'Althought', 'opines', 'has it aided', 'researchs', 'atrributed', 'ehancing', 'prese', 'knowlege', 'generaton', 'cascaded', 'sendimental', 'live', 'skils', 'transform', 'learnng', 'consider', 'acquisation', 'importantant') and word-choice inaccuracies (e.g., 'superior than' instead of 'superior to', 'sendimental' instead of 'sentimental'). While these errors are noticeable, communication is generally maintained, supporting a Band 5.5 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability to link clauses using conjunctions like 'while', 'although', and 'because'. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Science and Technology carry more weight has it aided', 'learning science has lead'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('i opines that'). Punctuation is particularly weak, with numerous instances of spaces placed incorrectly before punctuation marks and missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences ('i opines'). These persistent errors often cause difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptors well.
