Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the importance of science and technology for careers and the cultural value of history—and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as mentioning Tesla hiring AI engineers and Asian nations making history compulsory in schools. However, some arguments lack deeper elaboration, and the examples, while relevant, could be further developed to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is well-handled, satisfying the requirements for a clear response with a consistent viewpoint.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay is logically organised into four paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a conclusion. There is a clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally be mechanical or slightly flawed, as seen in the concluding sentence fragment ('competitive.') and repetitive referencing ('Most of the young generation...'). Paragraphing is used appropriately, but overall cohesion lacks the flexibility and natural flow characteristic of higher bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'employment opportunities', 'progect', and 'mutual bonding'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'higher' instead of 'hire', 'progect' instead of 'project', 'familior' instead of 'familiar', 'signifacnt' instead of 'significant', and 'frome' instead of 'from'. Furthermore, collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'history subjects' instead of 'history courses'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses with 'Although' and relative pronouns. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several recurring errors with articles, prepositions, and sentence fragments (e.g., 'in the competitive.'). Subject-verb agreement and punctuation are also occasionally faulty, as seen in 'Some of the individuals believe' and lowercase capitalization errors. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they occur with sufficient frequency to prevent the essay from achieving a band 6.5.
