Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the importance of history and the opposing view favoring science and technology, while also clearly stating a personal opinion in the introduction. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the ideas are relatively basic and lack sufficient depth and elaboration. For instance, the arguments regarding history are somewhat superficial, relying on vague statements like improving 'peoples lifes style'. The examples provided, such as reading a book about the Holy Prophet or a Cambridge student inventing a two-motor electric fan, are somewhat anecdotal and lack robust academic support. While the task is adequately addressed, pushing the score into a higher band would require more fully developed arguments and extended explanations of the ideas presented. Therefore, the response aligns best with Band 6 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct sections for each viewpoint. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as 'To begin with', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion can be somewhat mechanical or faulty at times, as seen in awkward transitions like 'development of by encouraging people'. Furthermore, some sentences lack smooth integration, making the flow occasionally disjointed. Although logical relationships between ideas are generally understandable, the use of cohesive devices is not entirely flexible or sophisticated. These characteristics fit comfortably within the Band 6 criteria for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, touching upon relevant themes related to education, history, science, and technological progress. There are attempts to use less common words and phrases, such as 'significant role', 'progress and development', and 'sorrounding these two topics'. However, numerous lexical errors and awkward word choices are present throughout the text, including spelling mistakes like 'Thr' instead of 'The', 'peoples lifes style' instead of people's lifestyles, 'personel' instead of personal, and 'ecourage' instead of encourage. Additionally, terms like 'economicb' show persistent typographical and spelling inaccuracies. While these errors do not severely impede overall communication, they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.0 because the inaccuracies are noticeable and cause some difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative pronouns (e.g., 'subjects like science and technology are most important than history' and 'an electric fan which have two motors'). However, there is a lack of control over grammatical accuracy, with frequent errors in verb tense, subject-verb agreement, and articles. Examples include 'it play's significant role', 'the happening in the past', 'book which contain', and 'debate sorrounding these two topics will likely to continue'. Grammatical mistakes occur frequently throughout the response and occasionally strain the reader's comprehension, although meaning remains generally discernible. These features align closely with the descriptors for Band 5, where a limited range of structures is combined with frequent errors.
