IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There has been an ongoing debate whether the most significant subject in educational instituitions such as schools is history or the science and technology. Although, history has it's own significance. In my opinion, students should give priority to subjects such as science and technology for the reasons that are discussed in the following paragraphs.

First and foremost, In this technological driven era, the largest proportions of workforce is dependent upon science and technological aspects. For instance, the introduction of Artificial Intelligence have succesfully prepared robots that are tend to do human labour work more efficiently. As a result, the working area has been bombarded with introduction of machines that facilitates the work. Therefore, schools should focus on these subjects more, in order to make students familiar with science, engineering and technology.

Alternatively, History is equally important aspect of education. Infact, most of the schools have started to make this subject compulsary for all students. history is necessary to understand the culture and heritage of the country. Young individuals ought to understand the reasons behind the different wars and their consequences on local and international aspects. Mistakes and actions that lead to such revolutionary conflicts could be known thorugh history. Students could be taught to avoid repeating such mistakes again the future.

As per my view, technology itself offers students different platforms to learn about history at anytime they prefer. however, subjects such as science should be taught from an early age as these subjects are difficult and holds greater importance in upcoming techinical era.

To put it in a nutshell, Although histroy plays a pivotal role in shaping the minds of younger generation through wars and conflicts, Schools should prioritize science driven subjects more for economical growth of individual as well as country on a broader aspects.

Paragraphs are mostly well-structured, but the occasional capitalization error (e.g., 'history is necessary') and repetitive phrasing in transitions slightly hinder the natural flow of ideas. Overall cohesion is clear, supporting a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'technological driven era', 'revolutionary conflicts', and 'pivotal role'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'instituitions', 'has it's own', 'compulsary', 'thorugh', 'however' (uncapitalised mid-sentence), and 'techinical'. These errors occasionally draw attention, but they do not impede communication. The vocabulary range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, matching the criteria for Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional and relative clauses ('While history has its own significance...', 'students should give priority... for the reasons that are discussed...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including 'are tend to do', 'human labour work', 'the largest proportions of workforce is' (subject-verb agreement error), and missing articles or incorrect prepositions.
