Student answer (Band 7.0)
There is a debate over which subject is more valuable in schools. While some people argue that History is crucial, others believe that Science and Technology are more relevant in the modern world. This essay will discuss both views before giving my own opinion.
On the one hand, learning History is extremely important. History teaches us about our past, our culture, and the mistakes of previous generations. By studying historical events, such as wars or economic crises, students can understand why they happened and how to avoid them in the future. For example, knowing about World War II helps us to value peace. Furthermore, History creates a sense of identity and pride. In countries like Pakistan, learning about the independence movement helps young people appreciate their freedom.
On the other hand, Science and Technology are more practical for today's world. We live in a technological age where progress depends on scientific knowledge. Subjects like Computer Science, Medicine, and Engineering provide students with skills that lead directly to jobs and economic growth. For instance, a student who learns coding can get a well-paid job, while History alone may not offer the same career opportunities. Moreover, science helps solve global problems like climate change and diseases, which is more urgent than knowing about the past.
In my opinion, both subjects are necessary, but Science and Technology should be given more importance in the curriculum. History should not be removed, but it should be taught to build character and awareness, while Science should be prioritized to prepare students for the future job market and for national development.
In conclusion, although History has great cultural and educational value, the practical benefits of Science and Technology make them more important in the 21st century.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether History or Science and Technology are more important, and provides a clear, well-developed personal position. In the second paragraph, the writer effectively explains why History is important, citing cultural identity and avoiding past mistakes. The third paragraph provides strong support for Science and Technology through practical benefits like job opportunities and solving global challenges. The conclusion smoothly synthesises these ideas while maintaining the stance that Science and Technology should be prioritised in the modern era. The ideas are extended and supported effectively throughout the essay, demonstrating a strong understanding of Task Achievement requirements at a Band 7.5 to 8 level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving seamlessly from the introduction to the exploration of History, then Science and Technology, followed by a nuanced personal opinion, and finally concluding. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'Moreover' are utilised flexibly to guide the reader through the argument. Referencing is clear and unambiguous, ensuring that the relationships between ideas are always transparent and easy to follow. Overall, this meets the criteria for Band 7.0 comfortably.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'economic crises', 'independence movement', 'technological age', and 'future job market' show a good grasp of topic-specific terminology. Furthermore, the writer attempts less common lexical items with general awareness of style and collocation, as seen in expressions like 'create a sense of identity' and 'national development'. While there are a few minor generalities, word choice is generally natural and communication is never impeded. The lexical range is solid and easily supports a Band 7.0 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The essay contains a good variety of complex structures alongside simpler sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical range. Sentences such as 'We live in a technological age where progress depends on scientific knowledge' and 'a student who learns coding can get a well-paid job, while History alone may not offer the same career opportunities' showcase effective subordination and coordination. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled well throughout. Grammatical errors are very rare and non-systematic, meaning that meaning is never obscured or impeded. This performance aligns well with the descriptors for Band 7.5.
