Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to discuss both views regarding the importance of history versus science and technology, and provides an opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times superficial. For instance, the discussion on the pros and cons of history states that it is a 'waste of time' without substantial expansion. While all parts of the prompt are addressed, the arguments lack depth and the supporting examples, such as the mention of mobile phones, are generalized. The position is stated but could be more fully sustained throughout the body paragraphs. These shortcomings align well with the Band 5 descriptor, where the task is addressed partially and ideas remain somewhat under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps structure the overall response. However, the progression of ideas lacks clear connectivity and logical transitions between sentences. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the transition 'Firstly, lets discuss the pros...' followed immediately by fragmented sentence structures. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the mechanical repetition of introductory phrasing hinders smooth reading. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is frequently faulty. This performance fits the Band 5 level, characterized by some organization but a lack of clear overall progression and inadequate or mechanical cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. Examples include phrases like 'living style' instead of 'lifestyle', 'pursing History' instead of 'pursuing history', and 'rise' instead of 'increase' or 'rose'. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'modernization' and 'manufactured', but these attempts are often marred by improper forms (e.g., 'becomed better', 'connnected', 'eaiser'). The range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. Because errors are noticeable and occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader, this merits a Band 5 rating under lexical resource descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and attempted complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Both subjects has', 'adults believed that History is... to learned'), tense consistency (e.g., 'teached', 'becomed', 'has cured'), and word formation. Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic throughout the text. While the basic meaning can usually be discerned despite the errors, the high frequency of grammatical inaccuracies places the writing firmly at Band 5, where attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty and errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
