Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on the importance of history versus science and technology, and a clear personal opinion is stated in the conclusion. Ideas are relevant, such as mentioning the World Wars for history and advancements in medical fields or robotics for science and technology. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on science and technology clusters several points together without fully elaborating on each one. The student attempts to provide examples like Japan and South Korea, which adds support, but the overall depth of exploration aligns best with Band 6 descriptors where relevant ideas are present but slightly under-developed in places.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing separating the introduction, the two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The student relies heavily on repetitive transitional phrases such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Take another example'. Paragraphing is present, but referencing and logical progression within paragraphs can be disjointed, as seen in the third body paragraph where multiple disparate points are crammed together with weak linking. The opening also shows abrupt transitions. These features are characteristic of Band 5, where there is some organization and paragraphing, but cohesive devices are often inadequate or repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'advancements', 'dependency', 'fossil fuels', and 'problem solving'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'youngs mind' instead of 'young minds', 'debates' instead of 'debate', 'provital' instead of 'pivotal', 'ancesters' instead of 'ancestors', 'alots' instead of 'a lot', 'crusial' instead of 'crucial', 'oppurtunities' instead of 'opportunities', 'climates changesand' instead of 'climate change and', and 'air pollutions at the atmosphere' instead of 'air pollution in the atmosphere'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses with 'such as' and relative pronouns. However, control over grammar and punctuation is weak, with frequent errors that disrupt readability. Examples include missing articles ('in todays modern world', 'in medical area'), incorrect verb tenses and agreement ('what mistakes they did. they can improves', 'surgical ropots saves'), run-on structures, and widespread punctuation and capitalization issues (e.g., lowercase 'i', missing apostrophes). Complex sentences are frequently faulty. Because the frequency of errors is high and affects basic grammatical accuracy, the response falls into the Band 5 category for grammar.
