Student answer (Band 5.5)

People have different views on whether history is the most crucial subject in school or science and technology related subjects are more important than history. I believe subjects like science and technology are the most important subjects owing to the fact that science and technology related subjects offer a wide range of future opportunities and make student more creative and innovative.

History is a crucial subject in both elementary and secondary school. As an illustration, students can learn about . However, students who are experts in history will be unable to cope with the upgradation of science and modern technology without knowledge enough in science and technology in future.

There are reasons why seience and technology related subjects are important in school. Firstly, those subjects can provide students a wide range of career opportunities after their graduation. A student who is an expert in technology, usually get more job opportunity than a student who is expert in history. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the importance of history and the greater importance of science and technology—and presents a clear personal opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the paragraph dedicated to history is very brief and contains an incomplete sentence ('students can learn about .'). On the other hand, the arguments supporting science and technology are better supported with reasons and examples, such as mentioning Meta, OpenAI, and historical figures like Newton and Einstein, even though some minor factual or spelling slips occur. Overall, the task is adequately fulfilled, corresponding to a Band 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing separating the introduction, the discussion of the opposing view, the main supporting body paragraph, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used to structure the text, although referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the second paragraph and the third paragraph is somewhat abrupt. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but logical progression could be smoother. This level of organisation aligns well with a Band 6.0 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'innovative', 'fundamental theories', and 'career opportunities'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'upgradation' instead of upgrading or advancement, 'seience' instead of science, 'relay' instead of rely, 'Gient' instead of giant, 'hiring' instead of are hiring, and 'genious' instead of geniuses. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary remains minimally sufficient for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I believe subjects like science and technology are the most important subjects owing to the fact that...' However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors. Examples include missing articles ('a student who is expert in history'), subject-verb agreement issues ('usually get more job opportunity'), preposition errors ('do many research works on'), and an incomplete sentence in the second paragraph. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they persist throughout the essay, preventing the score from reaching Band 6.5. A Band 5.0 is appropriate here.
